“I’ll go talk to them,” I said, putting my hand on his arm and getting up from the table.

“No, Layne, you don’t have to do that. They’re my daughters. I’ll deal with it when we’re done.”

I wanted to argue that he had to go talk to them now, but I wasn’t going to question his parenting skills. He was their dad, and I was their nanny.

We three adults finished our food in mostly silence and I grabbed our plates and put away the leftovers as Mark went to talk to the twins.

Honor carried a few plates into the kitchen and lingered.

“I guess I shouldn’t have stayed,” Honor said as I put the rice into a container.

“Maybe not,” I said.

Honor sighed. “Can you tell Mark that I went home? I don’t really want to stick around if he’s going to make them apologize.”

Yeah, that would probably be pretty embarrassing, I had to admit.

“Sure,” I said, and she nodded once at me before grabbing her bag and rushing out to her car.

Mark came back downstairs with the twins following him, pretending to hang their heads, but I saw them sharing smiles back and forth. Oh, they knew exactly what they’d done.

“Where’s Honor?” Mark asked.

“She had to get home,” I said, loading the dishwasher.

Mark nodded.

“Well, you’re off the hook for apologizing to her in person, but you’re both going to write apology notes.”

“For what?” Riley asked.

Mark’s eyes narrowed and he crossed his arms.

“You know what. You’re not as crafty as you think you are, my girls.”

Riley and Zoey looked up at Mark with big, innocent eyes.

“We were just making conversation,” Zoey said.

I rolled my eyes. They were really laying it on thick.

“You will both, independently, write notes. In separate rooms. Go,” Mark said, laying on his Dad Voice that shut down any disagreement.

Once the two had gone off to take care of his assignment, Mark looked at me.

“Do you think that was good?” he asked. “Every time I think I’ve got this parenting thing nailed, something new comes up and I’m completely unprepared.”

“You should talk to Sadie. Ask what she’d do,” I said.

Mark nodded. “You’re right. I should at least let her know about this new behavior so she can be on the lookout for it.”

He pulled out his phone to call Sadie, and I was happy about that.

“I’m going to head out. Good luck with all of that.”

Mark nodded as he called Sadie, and I left him to deal with his kids.
