“So,what were you trying to do?” I asked the twins the next morning when I woke them up for breakfast. “If you were trying to make Honor uncomfortable, congrats. If you were trying to be subtle about it, you failed.”

I got identical innocent faces again.

“We weren’t trying to do anything,” Riley said.

“Yes, you were,” I said. “Come on, tell me the plan.” Obviously, they had a plan.

Riley and Zoey shared a look.

“You can’t tell Dad,” Riley said.

“How about you tell me what you’re doing and then I’ll decide if I need to involve your dad,” I said, sitting on the bed. I needed to get breakfast going, but this was more important.

“We’re trying to get Mom and Dad back together,” Riley finally said.

I gestured for her to continue. “Go on.”

“We know that Honor wants to marry Dad. It’s really obvious,” Riley said.

“Really obvious,” I agreed.

“So we need to make her go away, and we need to get Dad and Mom alone together,” Zoey said. So far, this plan made sense.

“And how are you going to do that?” I asked.

“Drive Honor away, and at the same time, Dad will have to talk to Mom more. We don’t care if we get in trouble as long as it works,” Riley said.

“We don’t want Honor as our stepmom,” Zoey said, making a face. “She doesn’t like us.”

I couldn’t argue with their reasoning.

“And she just wants Dad’s money,” Riley added.

This was all true.

“Are you going to tell Dad?” Zoey asked.

I sighed. This was a dilemma.

“Okay, so I’m not going to tell your dad, on a few conditions.” They both looked at me eagerly.

“You can’t harass Honor. Yes, she’s trying to marry your dad for his money, but your dad is a smart man. And I think if he doesn’t give her any hint that he’s interested, she’ll move on.” I hoped.

“As far as trying to get your parents back together? That’s something they’re going to have to figure out, too. I know that would be the ideal situation, but there’s very little that the two of you can do to make that happen.”

I was trying really hard to give them the right advice, even if I was totally in support of their plan and their motives.

Riley and Zoey shared one of their twin looks and I waited for them to be done.

“Okay?” I asked.

“Okay,” they both said in unison. The twinkle in their eyes told me that they were lying, and I chose to ignore it.

Honor didn’t askto stay for dinner the rest of the week, which I was grateful for. Next week was book club, and I had no idea if she was going to show up again. Our book this month was a contemporary romance between two former friends that reunite in their small town years later during a real estate deal. It had all the small-town charm that reminded me of Arrowbridge, and I was looking forward to seeing if everyone else loved it as much as I did.

Would Honor be there? A cute romance didn’t seem like her kind of thing, but maybe she’d related to the real estate agent who will stop at nothing to do her job well. That was Honor all right.
