“Thanks for not poisoning the brownie,” a voice said in my ear and I almost dropped the cup of wine, but I was able to keep my hold on it at the last second.

Turning, I met Honor’s eyes. They were such a beautiful icy blue that they almost looked like they were colored contacts. I didn’t think they were.

“You’re welcome,” I said. “I guess you liked this book, huh?”

Why was I suddenly so terrible at talking?

“I did. When do we vote on what the next book will be?” At every meeting, we took suggestions for the next book, and then the votes were counted in the next few days via email so anyone who hadn’t attended could have a say.

“You’ll get an email tomorrow,” I said. “Which one are you picking?”

Honor reached for the last brownie. “I’m not telling you. I don’t want you to influence my vote.”

I pretended to gasp. “I would never do that. Hey, have you ever read anything by Skylar Alyssa?”

She shook her head.

“Well, if you liked this month’s read, then you’ll love her. Come on.”

I walked toward the Skylar Alyssa shelf and hoped that Honor would follow me.

It hadn’t escaped my notice that Joy and Sydney had been cleaning up and had left me and Honor alone.

She did follow me to the shelves, which had a sign that said LOCAL AUTHOR on it.

“She comes in and signs a lot too,” I said, picking up the first book in the most recent series. “Try this one.”

Honor took the book from me, our fingers brushing.

She read the back and nodded. “I’ll give it a try.”

This time I followed Honor to the register. Joy skipped over and rung up the book.

“She’s doing a signing in a few weeks if you want to come and meet her,” Joy said.

“I’ll think about it,” Honor said, and Joy beamed at me before going back to finish cleaning up.

“I didn’t think sapphic romances would be, um, your kind of thing,” I blurted out. It was something I’d been thinking about since she showed up at the first one. I mean, it wasn’t like we advertised as a queers-only book club, so she might not have known when she first came. But she was back now and seemed to want to keep coming.

“What kind of books did you think were my kind of thing?” she asked with an arched eyebrow.

“Ones on how to marry your boss?” I asked and the playfulness was gone in a second.

Honor leaned close to me and I could see the rage ignite in her eyes.

“You—” she said, but she didn’t continue.

“Me?” I said as I moved closer to her, as if drawn to her inner flame.

“You,” Honor said and then I was almost knocked off my feet as she kissed me. No, she didn’t just kiss me. Her mouth attacked mine. Almost as if she was angry at me and was punishing me with her lips.

The kiss shocked me, but then my brain registered that Honor was kissing me and I…I liked it. A lot. Her mouth was plush and firm and hot and delicious. I hadn’t been kissed in a long time, and for a second I forgot what to do, but then her tongue licked the seam of my lips and with a moan, I opened up and Honor Conroy’s tongue was in my mouth.

Honor Conroy’s tongue was in my fucking mouth and the world had gone completely bonkers. Before I knew what was happening, the kiss was over, and I was blinking my eyes open in a daze.

Honor stormed out of the bookstore without another word as I pressed my hand against my mouth.
