“What just happened?”Joy asked as I stared out the door and wondered if I should go after Honor.

“I don’t even know,” I said. “Did that just happen?”

“Honor sucking your face off? Yeah, that happened,” Sydney said.

“I need to go home,” I said as Joy and Sydney stared at me.

“Call me to let me know you got there safely,” Joy said as I grabbed my bag and walked out to my car, still completely perplexed and more turned on than I’d been in my entire life.

What the actual hell?

Chapter Nine

The next morning,I made sure to linger in the kitchen so I’d see Honor when she walked in. I’d pulled up a blank message to text her and ask why she’d kissed me at least a hundred times the previous night but figured that this was the kind of thing you talked about in person. My brain was incapable of thinking about anything other than that kiss and the questions it created. Was it a mistake? What did it mean for her plans with Mark? Was Honor even queer? Too many questions and only Honor had the answers. I also wanted to apologize for the shitty comment that had led to the kiss. The outcome might have been good, but it was still a nasty thing to say and I didn’t feel good about it.

Honor was back to her beautiful self with a sleek dark blue sheath dress and her heels when she arrived. My eyes went instantly to her mouth and that deep red lip stain.

I needed to go over to Sadie’s and watch the twins, but I wanted to deal with Honor first.

“Hey,” I said as she made to walk right past me to the office. My voice stopped her.

“Can we talk about last night?” I asked.

Honor shook her head. “Not now,” she said before rushing down the hall. Maybe I should have given her another brownie to get her to open up. I did a quick search of the cabinets and we didn’t really have anything brownie-like on hand.

Hm. Nothing I could do about it now, but I did think about it as I drove to Sadie’s.

The twins had founda boat they wanted to rent and asked me to email the company to find out about available dates after their mom had left for work. I typed out an email and showed them that I sent it.

“What are we doing today?” Riley asked. That was the eternal question. If I didn’t plan things out, it probably would have made me homicidal hearing it every single day.

“How does going to the library, then lunch, then bringing your mom lunch at the shop and then going to the movies sound?” I asked, and their faces both lit up.

I made sure their rooms were clean before we headed out. The Arrowbridge Library had gotten a grant a few years ago to add on a really nice teen space. Not only did they have plenty of books for the kids, but they also had computers they could use, and tablets to rent, and even a TV with a few games on it.

Whenever the twins were bored, I shoved them in the teen room and told them to have fun. There were always other kids in there from school, and many a rainy day had been spent here.

They also did movies in the middle of the day in the small theater and they made sure they weren’t just for little kids.

I returned a few books and said hi to the volunteer as the twins headed for the teen room when they spotted a few of their friends.

I hit the New Releases table looking for anything that might catch my fancy. As many books as I bought, I also borrowed heavily from the library. It was the perfect way to check out a new author without the commitment of buying a book.

I didn’t see anything I liked, so I just sort of wandered around and then chatted with one of the librarians, who was my age and always took my advice on what they might want to order.I was doing my best to distract my mind from thoughts about kissing Honor, but I wasn’t doing a great job at it.

Looking for something different that might capture my attention, I hit the non-fiction section for a random book and found one on the radium girls that looked intriguing, if a little depressing.

There was some new art on the walls that I looked at before going back to the circulation desk to check out my book and chat with the librarian before grabbing the twins and heading to Nick’s Pizza for lunch.

I checked my emails and I had a message back from the boat company for the twins.

“Okay, here are the dates,” I said, reading them off. “I’ll just forward you the email.” I sent it to them, and they started plotting again as I finished my pizza.

“So how are you going to play this?” I asked as we threw out the trash and left the pizza place.

“We’re going to tell them that we have a surprise for them and that it’s really important,” Riley said. “They can’t say no to both of us.”
