“Wait,” I said holding my hand up. “I need to get one thing clear.”

I met Honor’s eyes and I could tell she knew exactly what I was going to ask.

I opened my mouth and asked the question. “Is this a date?”

Honor didn’t look away from my eyes. “Do you want it to be?”

I opened my mouth and then closed it. “I don’t know! You’re a really confusing person, Honor, I hope you know that.”

She nodded and looked down at her hands in her lap. “I do. Believe me, I do.”

“Because one minute you’re trying to seduce Mark and be his second wife and the next you’re kissing me and telling me you like women and now we’re here eating ice cream and it’s just…very fucking confusing.”

I took a deep breath and waited for her to answer. Honor looked up from her hands.

“I’m very fucking confused, Layne,” she said. Honor cursing was kind of hot.

“You confuse me,” she whispered. “What I said about you fucking up my plans, I was being honest. Yes, I thought about marrying Mark. You can think I’m a horrible person, that’s fine. But then you were there, and you were annoying and distracting and you were always around, and it wasn’t easy to think about Mark anymore.”

I had to remind myself to breathe.

“Me?” I looked down at myself.

Honor nodded. “Yes, you. Give yourself some credit. You have a confidence about you that you aren’t even aware of. And you are so good with those kids and they love you so much. You care for your friends and you take care of this family and you’re always trying to make everyone’s life better. It’s so different from what I’m used to.”

Right. Her mother.

“I learned that you should never be kind to someone unless you were going to get something out of them. You never expect anything from people. You give without thought of reciprocation.”

“I do?” I asked. The way Honor was describing me, it sounded like I was some kind of saint, which was definitely not true.

“You’re a good person, Layne. A genuinely good person. They are rare in this world, and I guess I find your qualities irresistible.”

“I’m irresistible?” I squeaked. How was this even happening?

Honor sighed. “You are, and believe me, I tried. The more you teased me and the more time I spent around you, the harder it became to think about anything else but you.”

My mouth dropped open. This was a lot of information to absorb at once.

“I don’t even know what to say,” I told her. “I think I’m in shock right now.”

Honor’s face got red. “I’m not very happy about it myself. You weren’t in my plans.”

“I’m sorry?” I said. “Should I make you some more slutty brownies?”

“I had something different in mind,” she said before pushing herself up on the couch and leaning over to me. Honor brushed her fingers across my cheeks before barely brushing her lips across mine.

This kiss was a polar opposite to our first one. That kiss had been vicious and angry. More of a combustion than a kiss.

This kiss was tender and sweet and completely threw me off guard. I didn’t know what to do with this kind of kiss from Honor.

My lungs stuttered like a car engine on a cold day. Honor left little delicate kisses on my lips and then pulled back.

“Should I stop?” she asked, her hand still on my cheek.

“No, but you’re kissing like you’re scared of me,” I said. “It’s weird.”

Honor smiled. “I am scared of you, Layne.” Her voice was barely above a whisper.
