Page 65 of Kissed By Her

At last, we made it to the front of the line, and I ordered coffee for Syd, but also got some for myself and Honor and two brownies.

After I paid and picked up our order, I delivered the coffee to Sydney and she sung her song of gratitude.

“Listen, I have to get going to supervise the twin’s sleepover, but we’ll talk tomorrow?”

“Oh, we will definitely be talking tomorrow,” Syd said, smirking at Honor.

“Stop making things weird, Syd,” I said, hitting her on the arm.

“I’m not being weird,” she said.

“Yeah, you are. Goodbye,” I said, walking back down the sidewalk with Honor as we sipped our coffee.

“Do you really have to go?” Honor asked. “I don’t want to keep you from your job.”

I checked the time on my phone. “No, I have some time. I just decided I wanted to spend it with you instead of dealing with a million questions from Sydney.”

Part of the street was taken up with chairs and tables so people could sit and eat, and I took one and sat down.

Honor joined me, pulling her brownie out of the bag from the coffee shop. It had extra chocolate chips in it and was still warm.

“You and your friends are really close,” Honor said.

“I mean, yeah. That’s how best friends work,” I said.

Honor studied her brownie. “I don’t really have friends. Other than my sister. My mom always told me that other kids would try to stab me in the back and hurt me and take things away from me.”

“Your mom is a real asshole,” I said, sipping my coffee. I was going to need the buzz to get through the sleepover later.

“I know that now,” Honor said, breaking off a little bit of the brownie. “At the time I thought everything she said was right and true and by the time I figured out how much she’d messed me up, it felt like it was too late to try and fix it.”

“Oh, we can fix this,” I said. “You’ve already started trying to make friends by joining book club.”

“I joined book club so I could see you,” she said in a low voice.

“I’m sorry, what was that?” I cupped my ear and leaned over the table.

“I joined book club so I could see you, okay? Are you happy?”

“You totally like me,” I said, smiling. “That’s adorable.”

Her face went red, but she was smiling too.

“Did you really join book club because of me?”

“I told myself it was to make friends, but it was mostly for you.”

“But you didn’t like me,” I said.

“Oh, I did. I just lied to myself about it for a while,” she said, licking a little bit of chocolate off her lips.

I really, really wanted to kiss her right now.

“I think I did the same thing. Maybe that’s why I was so pissy about you going after Mark. Because I wanted you for myself.”

Honor rested one arm on the table, and I reached out and ran my fingers up and down the inside of her arm.

“Mmmm, you wanted me?”
