“That’s not going to cut it,” Joy said, crossing her arms and leaning against the counter. “They’re going to want to see someone new. You know single ladies who would pretend to be my date for my sister’s wedding?”

She laughed, but I thought she was serious.

“We’ll ask around,” Sydney said. “So, Layne, how are things going with Honor?”

Seems like someone was desperate to change the subject.

“Whatisgoing on with Honor?” Joy asked, her attention from her own troubles diverted by potentially juicy information.

“Honestly, things are kind of new? And weird. But good!” They both looked at each other and then at me.

“Honor doesn’t know if she wants to do the whole relationship thing, so we’re kind of…doing whatever. She likes me, I like her, and that’s about as far as we’ve gotten. It’s only been a few days.”

Joy squealed and gave me a hug. “I’m happy for you. I’m going to reserve judgment until we all hang out together and I can get to know her better. If you like her, we like her. Right, Syd?”

“I’m on the fence, but I fully support you getting some,” Sydney said, coming over to hug me.

“Aw, thanks. You’re both the best. And she’s not as terrible as I made her out to be.”

“Yeah, I think that’s your hormones talking, but that’s okay,” Syd said, giving me a squeeze and then letting go.

Honor kept textingme during dinner, and I couldn’t help but answer.

“Wow, you are in it deep,” Sydney said as I looked up from a meme picture she’d sent me. Over the past day or so, I’d realized that Honor had a cutting sense of humor that I appreciated. Sure, it could be a little dark, but all the best people were.

“I am not,” I said.

“Don’t listen to her,” Joy said. “She’s just jealous.”

“Absolutely not,” Sydney said. “I don’t need all of that stuff.” She pointed at me with her fork.

“What stuff?” I asked.

“The flirting and the getting to know everything about each other and the long conversations about nothing. I don’t need it. That stuff’s too complicated. Give me a quick hot bang and I’m good.”

Joy and I shared a look and decided not to comment.

“To each their own,” I said. The thing was, if what Syd really wanted was a hookup, I would absolutely be for that. But I knew she was lonely. I knew she wished she had someone to hang out with that wasn’t me or Joy. Someone to be her emergency contact and to trust all her secrets with. Sydney kept protesting that she didn’t need a relationship so often and so loudly that I wasn’t sure who she was trying to convince.

I didn’t staythat late at Joy and Sydney’s and I told myself it was because I was tired, but it was also because I wanted to lay in bed and send messages back and forth with Honor.

I was so curious what she did when she wasn’t at work, and she hadn’t really answered my curiosity yet.

What else did you do today?I asked, trying to get a window into her life.

Took my sister to go shopping for some school things she needed for next year. She’s getting an apartment, so now she needs all kinds of things, she responded.

When Liam had gotten his first place, I’d helped him out, so I didn’t really have a leg to stand on when it came to being an older sister helping a younger sibling with finances.

If I hadn’t helped Liam, he would still be sleeping on a mattress on the floor and have a futon in the living room, I sent.

His confusion when I said that he couldn’t keep his grungy, saggy futon and expect to ever have a serious girlfriend as an adult still made me laugh.

Honor and I shared our older sister woes, and I was starting to get a better picture of her. Thought I had yet to meet her sister, I could tell that she didn’t quite have the same level of ambition that Honor did. Even though Honor told me her whole thing had been to marry rich, she’d still gone to school and had built a career. She told me it was to put her in the company of rich guys, but there were a lot of other ways to do that that didn’t involve getting a college degree and going into debt.
