What Honor said and what she did were often at odds with each other and I didn’t know if she was aware of it.

Interesting.

I should probably go to sleep at some point. I have some monsters to take care of tomorrow, I sent.

And I have to manage their father, Honor replied, and I laughed.

It took a team of two of us to handle the Jewel family.

Chapter Thirteen

Honor camein for work as I was finishing up the twin’s breakfast and making sure they had anything they might need for their week at Sadie’s. Mostly they had two of everything, but things like their phones and tablets had to travel to each house.

“Go check your room,” I said, pushing them upstairs. I waited until the door slammed before looking at Honor.

“Hi,” I said, stepping close to her. Making out at work was probably forbidden, but it didn’t stop me from wanting to. In fact, it made the urge worse. The idea of pulling her into a random room and making out with her was tantalizing.

“Good morning,” she said in a prim voice. Oh. She was putting up a barrier. We probably should have talked about this at some point. I guess I just got so lost in flirting with her, I forgot about logistics.

I saluted her. “Good morning.”

That made her smile and roll her eyes. “You don’t have to be quite that formal, Layne.”

I leaned forward and whispered. “Okay, but how formal should I be? A handshake? A curtsy?” I put one leg behind the other and tried to execute a curtsy like I’d seen in the movies.

“I can’t even deal with you right now. It’s too early,” Honor said, and turned to go into the office.

“You want to come over later?” I asked in a low voice.

“Maybe. Let me see how my day goes,” she said, and just before she turned to walk down the hall, she brushed her fingers across my lips. It wasn’t a kiss, but it still made me tremble.

“Have a good day, Layne,” she said, winking before she disappeared.

I stood there for a second, completely stunned. I didn’t even notice when the twins came barreling downstairs with their bags.

“You alive?” Riley asked, snapping her fingers in front of my face.

“Yup,” I said, blinking to clear my head. “Did you get everything?”

They nodded in unison.

“Okay, let’s go.” I grabbed my bag and they followed me out to the car, but I couldn’t help glancing through the window in Mark’s office. Honor was standing next to his desk, nodding and completely focused on her work.

Hot. Very hot.

Riley and Zoeycalled me on being distracted all day. Sadie had left a list of chores for them to do, one of which included helping at the boutique, so I brought them over after lunch.

“Sorry, just have a lot on my mind,” I said as I parked the car and the girls hopped out to walk to the boutique.

“Snap out of it,” Riley demanded. “You’re supposed to be in charge of us. Our parents will get mad if something happens.”

She had a good point.

“Then just don’t run out into traffic, and we’ll be good,” I snapped back at her, holding the door of the boutique open.

“No promises,” Zoey said in a sing-song voice. I stopped myself from responding
