Honor made a face. “Let’s not talk about the ocean anymore.”
The two of us lingered on the beach even as it was getting dark.
“I really should head home,” Honor kept saying.
“You don’t have to, you know,” I said. I wasn’t suggesting that she had to come over to spend the night and fuck me but wasn’tnotnot suggesting it either.
“You’re saying I could sleep on the beach? Just make a nice little bed of seaweed like a mermaid?” Honor said.
“You’d make such a hot mermaid,” I said as I imagined it. “That’s a definite possibility for a Halloween costume,” I said.
“I don’t do Halloween,” she said.
“You do now. As long as you’re with me, a couple’s costume is required.”
Honor sat down on the bench to brush off her feet and put her shoes back on.
“This is sounding like a lot of work,” she said.
I pretended to toss my hair. “But I’m worth it.”
She snorted as I sat down next to her. “But you’re changing the subject.”
She looked over at me as I sat down next to her to deal with my shoes.
“Is that too much too soon? Asking you to stay over? We don’t have to have sex,” I said, and two people walking by gave me dirty looks.
Honor put her socks on and then laced up her sneakers.
“The couch pulls out into a bed,” I added.
Honor looked out at the water as if she was gathering her thoughts.
“Wait, have you ever been with a girl before?” I asked, probably a little too loudly, but there was no one around to hear this time.
Honor’s face instantly went red and I knew I was right.
“Hey, no pressure.”
“Layne!” Honor said, turning fully to face me. “Can you just chill out for a second and stop trying to fill the silence?”
I opened my mouth and then shut it with a snap.
“Sorry,” I said.
“Yes,” she said in a low voice. “I’ve never been with a woman before, but I’m not scared about having sex. I guess I just don’t know…if I’m ready.” She mumbled the last part so low I could barely hear her.
“Hey, no big deal, that’s fine. I don’t want to rush you at all. I was just offering, in case. But I’ll follow your lead when it comes to staying over.”
Honor made a disgusted noise. “Now you’re just patronizing me, and it feels gross.”
Fuck.
“I don’t know what to say!” I said. “I want you to feel comfortable with how things are going between us.”
“I know, Layne. I know. I just feel like it’s so easy for you.” She brushed imaginary sand particles off her jeans.
“Oh, I wouldn’t say it’s been easy. Firstly, it took me how long to realize that I actually liked you? Joy and Syd could have stood in front of me with an electric sign that said LAYNE LIKES HONOR and I would have ignored it.”
