PerfectI replied and pulled out my hot sauce to prepare in case she didn’t grab any to go with it.

I read while I waited, our new book club book. It was affectionately known as “the MILF book,” due to it being a romance between a woman and her daughter’s best friend, and so far, it was scorching hot.

Clementine announced Lark’s arrival before I heard her walk through the door with a bag of tacos.

“Dinner is served,” she said as she slid her boots off and removed her winter coat.

“Not for kitties,” she said to Clementine.

“He just ate,” I said as Clementine rolled onto his back and meowed pitifully.

“Are you sure? He disagrees with you,” Lark said, carefully rubbing his belly and taking her hand away before he could attack it.

“He’s a little furry liar,” I said, looking down at my cat. He blinked innocently.

Lark started pulling tacos out.

“I got a little bit of everything,” she said.

I pulled out some plates and looked through, grabbing two beef crunchy tacos, some rice and beans, and some queso to top it with.

“Hot sauce?” I asked.

“They just had the little packets and I know you have a more discerning palate,” she said. “So I didn’t get it.”

I was an “any hot sauce port in a taco storm” usually, but I liked that she’d thought about me when making the decision.

“That works,” I said, opening the bottle and shaking it over everything. “Want some?” She shook her head at the offered bottle.

“I’m good.”

We took our plates to the living room and sat together on the couch.

“Um, did you want to watch anything?” Joy and I usually put on an episode of a reality show or something when we had dinner. Nothing that we had to think too much about and could talk over.

“Oh, sure,” she said. “I’m fine with whatever.”

I went to the baking show that I liked to watch with Joy sometimes. There was a new episode, but it seemed rude to put that on if she hadn’t seen the whole season, so I went back to the beginning.

“I’ve been meaning to watch this, but I haven’t yet,” she said. “Isn’t there a queer woman on this season?”

“Yup, and she’s hot as hell,” I said. “I don’t even care if she can bake. She should just win by default.”

Not wanting to spoil the rest of the season, I didn’t tell Lark that the woman I was rooting for was in the semi-final and I couldn’t wait to see if she was going to win.

The show was sweet and low-stress, perfect after a long day. My tacos weren’t great, but they were good enough and I finished my plate before going back to see if there was anything left. I added two soft tacos to my plate and dressed them with hot sauce before sitting down with Lark again. She seemed to be fixated on the show, so that gave me a chance to watch her.

I still wasn’t used to how sexy she was, and it seemed like she was only getting hotter by the minute. A soft smile played on her face as she watched the contestants get introduced.

“I’ve always wanted to know how to bake,” she said. “But it seems so difficult.”

“I know. I tried to make bread once and it was a complete disaster. Just awful.” I shuddered at the memory. That was when Joy had patted my shoulder and told me we should just get bread from the grocery store.

“Too bad Christmas has already passed. I could have asked Honor for a bread machine.”

“You could ask her now. I’m sure she’d get you one,” I said.

Lark set down her empty plate. “True. I feel like I could get away with murder right now. Have anyone you want to off?”
