She turned and faced me instead of the TV screen.

“I’d have to think about that,” I said, finishing my last taco. “Can I get back to you?”

“Just hurry, because I don’t know how long this ‘oh poor fire girl’ thing is going to last.”

“Got it,” I said.

Silence fell between us and I didn’t know what to do with it, so I got up to deal with my dish.

Lark followed me with hers, and I tossed the remnants of the tacos and loaded my plate into the dishwasher.

“Are we not going to talk about it?” Lark asked quietly.

“Talk about what?” I asked.

“You know what about,” she said, crossing her arms and leaning on the counter. She was blocking the way back into the living room, so I was trapped.

“I just assumed you didn’t want to talk about it,” I said. “You hadn’t said anything.”

“I know, but I think we should, since we’re living together now.”

I closed my eyes. “Then I’m going to need some more pineapple tequila.”

* * *

This timeneither of us needed to drive, so after downing one shot, I immediately poured both of us another.

“Can we sit down for this?” I asked. Lark went to the couch with the shot glasses, and I followed her with the bottle.

“Give me a second.” I needed the alcohol to kick in first.

Lark waited and petted Clementine in the meantime.

“Just one more,” I said, pouring myself a third shot I knew I was probably going to regret tomorrow morning, but threw back anyway. Lark watched me, not going for her third.

“Okay,” I said, feeling the fire starting to glow in my belly. “Go for it.”

Lark looked at me.

“You’re the one who wanted to talk about it. So talk,” I said.

Lark rolled her eyes. “I’m not going to force this on you, Sydney. If you don’t want to be mature, then fine. But I’m enough of an adult to sit down and discuss things rationally.”

Ouch. That stung, but I wasn’t going to let her know that.

“I’m mature,” I said, but we both knew that wasn’t true.

“We don’t have to make this into a big deal. It was just a hookup. But I’m not going to walk around like it didn’t happen,” Lark said.

“I’m not walking around like it didn’t happen. I’m acting like it didn’t affect my life because it didn’t. None of my hookups do. That’s the point.”

I’d said words like that so many times, but this was the first time they felt…wrong.

Lark poured herself another shot and tossed it back, slamming the glass down.

“Fine. Works for me. See? That wasn’t so bad.”

She got up from the couch and went to her room and slammed the door.
