“Sorry,” I said, lowering my volume. “I’ll have breakfast here in a few minutes. Why don’t you crash on the couch?”

She just moaned and laid down and didn’t move or make a sound until I brought a plate to her with a cup of coffee.

“Bacon, egg, and cheese,” I told her as she accepted the plate and grimaced.

“Try a few bites and see how you feel,” I said, joining her with my own plate.

“Shh,” she said, taking a tiny bite of the sandwich, chewing, and swallowing. She waited a few seconds before taking another tiny bite.

I tried not to watch her too much and busied myself with my own breakfast.

Lark managed to get half the sandwich down and then nursed her coffee. I brought her some more painkillers and another glass of water.

“I’m going to sit here and hope it stays down,” she whispered. I just nodded and went to clean up. Quietly.

Lark started lookinga bit more chipper as the day wore on. I puttered around doing chores and this and that while she convalesced on the couch.

“I’m never drinking again,” she said around dinnertime. I was throwing together a quick chicken sheet-pan meal that Joy had taught me to make.

“Yeah, sure,” I said as I shoved the pan in the oven.

“I’m not,” she said.

“Okay, Lark,” I said.

She glared at me over the edge of the couch. She still looked like she’d had a rough night.

“I’m going to take a shower,” she grumbled, getting up.

While she was doing that, I got a message from Joy.

Hey, we need to plan Layne and Honor’s engagement partyshe sent.

They literally just got engagedI responded. I mean, I was all about having a party, but did we have to do it right fucking now?

I know, but I want it to be perfect for them. And I know you’d want to have your inputshe sent.

I mean, that was true. If she went ahead and planned it without running it by me first, I would be pretty pissed. Plus, she was going to need help.

Okay, hit meI replied.

What came next was a flood of links and even one to a mood board that Joy had already started putting together.

Jesus Joy, you’ve been busyI sent.

I may have started putting this together when Layne originally told me she was going to proposeshe responded with a sheepish emoji.

That was so Joy.

I’ll look through it and let you know my thoughts. Might take me a few hoursI sent with a kissy face emoji.

Lark came out of the shower wrapped in a towel and I kept my eyes on my phone, but that didn’t stop me about thinking about all her fresh, clean skin and how much I wanted to get her all dirty again and then take her to the shower again.

My horny feelings toward Lark still hadn’t subsided, which meant I just needed to find a new outlet to release them. Falling into bed with someone new was just the remedy.

Since the pickings in Arrowbridge were slim (at least they were for me), I had to expand my search area, and that meant logging back into my online dating profiles and doing some swiping.
