Lark inhaled sharply.

“I got drunk the other night because of you. I couldn’t stop thinking about you and all I wanted was to come home and fall into bed with you, so I just…kept drinking and hoping that would help. It didn’t.”

I traced her face with one finger, lingering on her lips.

“I tried to stop thinking about you. I tried to go fuck someone else and I couldn’t get out of my fucking car. So embarrassing. I’m pissed at you, just so you know.”

She smiled. “You have an interesting way of being mad at me,” she said, pinching one of my nipples.

“Sex and anger can go hand in hand, don’t you think?” I asked. “You haven’t had a hatefuck before?”

“Uh, no,” she said, her cheeks red.

“You should try it. Highly recommend.”

She shifted closer to me, putting one of her legs on top of mine. “I’ll consider it.”

We were quiet for a little while, just touching each other.

“This was a really bad idea,” she whispered.

“Ilovebad ideas,” I said. “They almost always work out for me. With a few exceptions, but those don’t count.”

Lark looked into my eyes. “Please don’t ruin my life.”

I laughed. “If giving you a bunch of orgasms is going to ruin your life, then I’m happy to do that.”

She sighed. “Can you be serious for five minutes, please?”

“Fine,” I said. “Proceed.” I gestured for her to continue.

Lark took a deep breath. “Have you ever been in a relationship, Sydney?”

“What kind of relationship?” I asked. I wasn’t being sarcastic.

“A committed one. Have you ever had a girlfriend before?”

“Uhhh, not really,” I said. “Not in the way you’re talking.”

Lark closed her eyes as if that was the answer she’d dreaded.

“Why does that matter? We’re just having fun, aren’t we?” I asked. “Sex doesn’t have to equal girlfriend.” At least not for me.

“I’ve never had a physical only relationship,” she said.

“That’s okay. I’ve had lots of experience. I can help you,” I said, stroking her stomach.

“I tried not having sex with you and that didn’t work,” she said.

“Obviously.” We’d tried to keep our hands off each other, and it had only resulted in us kissing or falling into bed.

“Listen, we’re probably so worked up because we’ve deprived ourselves. If we give in, then we’ll get over it and we can go back to being roommates,” I said.

“I’m not sure if it works that way,” she said.

“The other way we were trying wasn’t working. I don’t know about you but trying to stay away from you while living with you has been fucking terrible.”

“Yeah, I know,” she said. “It hasn’t been fun for me either. I keep trying to tell myself to get over you.”
