Chapter Twelve

Lark and Ifumbled through the rest of the work week together. I didn’t know what we were supposed to be doing, but what we ended up doing was cooking for each other, snuggling on the couch until we started to make out and then fuck, and then took a shower after. I asked her to brush my hair out because it was much nicer than doing it myself. She even sang a little bit more for me, which I cherished since I knew she was so shy about sharing her voice.

Every night I’d give her a kiss and go to my room and lay there, telling myself that I shouldn’t just push through her door and crawl into bed with her. Lark had set that boundary, and I was going to respect that one, at least.

Joy came over on Saturday to talk about engagement party logistics, and Lark invited Mia over. They went into Lark’s room, and I could not focus on what Joy was saying to me.

I had never seen a spark or anything that indicated either Lark or Mia were interested in each other, but you never knew.

“Syd, are you even listening to me?” Joy asked, snapping her fingers in front of my face.

“Yes, I am,” I said, moving my eyes from Lark’s door to Joy’s face.

“What did I just say?” she asked, crossing her arms.

“Something about decorations,” I said.

Joy huffed. “What specifically did I say about decorations?”

“Colors?” I guessed.

“Syd, what is up with you? You’re completely distracted and I’m going to take a shot in the dark and guess it’s behind door number one,” she said, pointing to her former room.

“No, it’s not,” I said too quickly.

“You’re jealous,” she said with a smirk. “It looks good on you.”

“I’m not jealous,” I said. “I’m just…”

“Jealous,” Joy sang. “It’s okay, we’ve all been there.”

“I’m not jealous,” I said, and cringed at how petulant my voice sounded in my own ears.

“Joy. It’s okay to have feelings for someone. We’ve talked about this.” She put her hand on mine, which had curled into a fist.

“I don’t have feelings for her. I like hanging out with her. That’s it,” I said.

Joy sighed. “You’re stubborn as hell, you know that?”

“Yes, I’ve been told,” I said, grinning at her.

Lark’s door opened and I jumped. Mia came out and waved before heading into the bathroom.

“You are so jealous,” Joy said. She sounded thrilled.

“Am not,” I said.

Joy headed backto her apartment to have dinner with her love, and Mia decided to stick around with us.

“I’m still living at home, so anytime I can get out is much appreciated,” she said as we crammed on the couch. She took the furthest spot on the left side with Lark in the middle.

Tonight, Lark had been in charge of cooking, and had used one of Layne’s recipes to make the most delicious orange chicken with rice and veggies.

I did my best not to glare at Mia whenever she spoke and did my best to ask her questions about her life. If she was going to be around, I might as well get to know her. From everything I’d seen, she was a sweet and bubbly person, and a good friend to Lark. That didn’t mean I wasn’t going to lose my shit when they went into Lark’s room together and closed the door.

“I can’t wait for book club,” Mia said. “I hope I have something to contribute.”
