“Don’t worry about that. You only have to talk if you want to,” Lark said. “Right, Sydney?”

“Right,” I said, nodding.

I clenched my teeth. Why did this nice girl joining book club set me on edge? I needed to get my shit together.

Somehow, I got through dinner and then Mia and Lark decided they wanted to watch a movie. I should have gone to my room and tried to read a book, but I wanted to keep my eye on them to see if there was any kind of sexual tension between them. So far, I hadn’t seen any, but you never knew when attraction could strike. I was on the lookout.

After what seemed like forever, Mia said she should probably get home and I said goodnight and Lark walked her to the door.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Lark asked once Mia was gone.

“What?” I asked, peering over the back of the couch.

“You were being so fucking weird, Sydney. Mia was being super nice, and you kept staring at her like she was going to rob you,” she said, coming over and flopping in the space Mia had just vacated.

“I wasn’t being weird,” I said. I’d been perfectly pleasant to her. I’d made small talk!

“You were. The irritation was radiating off you,” she said. “Is there something wrong with Mia?”

“No,” I said. “I don’t know why you think I was irritated, but I wasn’t. Must have been my resting bitch face.” That had been the culprit before of people thinking I was upset or pissed when I wasn’t.

“It was your whole energy,” Lark said, pointing at me. “If there’s nothing wrong with Mia, then why were you giving her the stink eye the whole time?”

“I wasn’t!” I got up from the couch and started pacing. “I wasn’t giving her the stink eye.”

Lark watched me pace for a few seconds and then her face lit up.

“Wait. Are you jealous?”

I froze and turned around to face her.

“No, I’m not jealous! Fuck. I’m fine, everything is fine!” I threw my hands in the air and wanted to scream again, but that would just alarm the neighbors.

“Syd. It’s okay to be jealous,” Lark said softly, getting up from the couch.

I wanted to argue with her, but I didn’t know what else to say. She laughed softly and put her arms around me.

“It’s cute that you’re jealous,” she said. I hesitated a second before I put my arms around her and buried my face in her hair. She always smelled so damn good.

“I’m not jealous,” I said, my voice muffled into her shoulder.

“Okay, you’re not jealous, but you’re definitely something. Poor Mia.”

I made a grumbling noise.

“So grumpy,” Lark said, pulling back and smiling at me. “It’s okay. Be grumpy if you want to.”

She tucked my hair behind my ears and then kissed the tip of my nose.

I melted into her arms again and sighed. “I’m not grumpy.”

Lark laughed and kissed me. “I know what to do to take care of your grumps.”

I gazed into her eyes. “Does it involve you getting naked?”

She nodded. “Nudity is definitely involved.”
