I sat back and watched her hold up each book and read the blurb, then set it aside and pick up the next one. At last, she settled on a romance book, a classic sapphic romance from years ago that Joy had forced me to read, and which I’d loved. Obviously.

“It’s a classic,” I said.

“I read the other one and saw the movie. Fingers crossed this one is good too.” She pointed at the title on the book.

“Haha,” I said. “Cute.”

“Now that I’ve selected my book, I need a snack,” she said.

“Perfect timing that we’re in a café,” I said, pointing to the counter.

“Hungry?” she asked, and I nodded.

As we waited in line, she took my hand and then I leaned in to say something in her ear.

“They have burritos,” I said.

She leaned back against me and I felt a little shiver go up her spine. “I saw that. I’d rather have yours right now.”

I laughed. A burrito might not be the sexiest metaphor, but I liked it anyway.

Lark did not order a burrito, and instead got a fruit, nut, and cheese plate, along with a caramel latte. I got an everything bagel with cream cheese and an iced coffee with cream and sugar.

“Now I feel bad that I have to give these books back and they have to reshelve them,” Lark said when we got our orders and sat down at the table again.

“It’s okay. At least you didn’t chuck them on the floor or try to shove them back yourself. Joy always says that she wishes people would give her the books instead of trying to put them back themselves,” I said.

“That makes sense,” she said, reaching out and swiping her finger along my chin before licking it off.

“Cream cheese,” she said with a wink.

Fuck, she was so pretty.

Lark boughther book and we headed back to the car and to our second stop, which actually was a department store that had a decent book section.

“Okay, I also needed some other stuff,” she said, getting a small cart. “So that’s why we’re here.”

We threw our bags in the cart and Lark wandered through the aisles, putting this and that in the cart, occasionally checking the list on her phone.

While we were here, I figured I could stock up on a few things, so I tossed deodorant and an air freshener and some tortillas, rice, and beans as well.

“I saw that,” Lark said.

“I’ve got burritos on the brain,” I said, leaning close and grabbing her ass. She yelped and then giggled. We earned a stern look from a woman who had to be at least a thousand years old. What was this, a library? I just gave her what I hoped was a dazzling smile and she muttered something to herself as she pushed her cart down the next aisle.

The cart had a lot of stuff in it by the time we made it to the books. Right next to the book section was an endcap with goofy gifts.

“Oh my god. We have to buy this,” Lark said, holding up a box. It turned out to be a blanket that was printed and shaped to look like a tortilla.

“It’s a burrito blanket,” Lark said, shoving one of them at me. “We’re both getting one.”

I snorted as I tossed one of the blankets in the cart and Lark tossed in a second one.

“Get another one,” I said. “For Clementine. Or guests.”

“We couldn’t leave out Clementine,” Lark said, adding another blanket.
