She danced along to a song as I pushed the cart into the book aisle and I reached for her.

“Come here,” I said as she continued to dance, making me sway with her as I gathered her in my arms.

“What is it?” she asked, still moving. I matched my movements to hers.

“Nothing,” I said, leaning in and kissing her right in the book aisle. “Just had to kiss you right here in the book aisle.”

“Good place to kiss,” she said.

“Mmmmm,” I said.

The book sectionat the department store mostly had bestsellers, so we caved and each got the same book, mostly to see what the hype was all about.

“I don’t know,” I said as Lark set two copies in the cart. “This book better not suck, hardcovers are not cheap.”

“We can always donate them if we hate it,” Lark said, looking over some of the other titles, and picked up a classic cookbook and added that to the stack.

“You know you can get recipes online for free,” I told her.

“I know, but I like the idea of owning a cookbook. Plus, there aren’t any of those annoying personal stories that you have to scroll through before you even get to the ingredients list.” She rolled her eyes and I had to agree. I knew that they wrote them so people wouldn’t steal their recipes, and to help with SEO, but I always got angry every time there wasn’t a “jump to recipe” button to hit.

The two of us wandered through the department store, looking at shoes and clothes and finally ended up in the housewares section.

“Why is this shit so expensive?” I said, putting a cute pillow back on the shelf after looking at the price tag.

“You never think about stuff like buying trash cans and lamps and small appliances when you’re a kid thinking about what it’s going to be like to be an adult. Of course, if my mother had gotten her way, I wouldn’t be caught dead buying any of this because I’d have an old rich man to buy me designer trash cans for the bathroom,” Lark said, making a face. “Sorry if I keep bringing her up.”

“Hey,” I said, taking her hand and kissing her palm. “It’s okay. You’re processing a lot of shit. Parent stuff is complicated.”

“Thanks,” she said. “Okay, enough of that shit.” She shook her head and moved on to look at the shower curtains but didn’t drop my hand.

By the time we checked out, it was getting dark, and I didn’t think we were going to make it to the third location. We’d spent a lot of time at the department store.

“Are you okay if we go have dinner?” Lark asked. “The other bookstore closes in a few minutes and it’s too far to make it.”

“Sure,” I said, adjusting her hat before we went outside.

“Is it weird that I’m totally craving Mexican right now?” she asked as we pushed the cart to my car.

“I am too. I’d kill for a burrito right now.”I wiggled my eyebrows.

Lark threw back her head and let out a loud laugh that was so beautiful and bright that it made my heart feel tight in my chest.

Lark managedto find a Mexican place nearby that also had bottomless margaritas.

“That is a bad idea, but maybe we could stop and get the ingredients and make them at home,” Lark said.

“That is a perfect idea, let’s do it.”

The restaurant was completely tacky and over decorated, but the burritos were massive and delicious and the chips and salsa they brought to the table seemed to be endless, so we were happy.

“Ask for an extra box,” Lark said just as the server came to see how we were doing. I still had a third of my burrito left, and Lark had only gotten through half of hers.

“Yeah, we’re going to need three boxes,” I said. The server nodded and grabbed them for us.
