‘Maybe if you would stop walking around naked, I wouldn’t think about it.’

‘Problem fixed,’ he said a minute later, zipping up a black pair of elegant pants, then moving upwards to button up a white dress shirt.

Like that would fix any problem.

I just blankly stared at the way the white piece of material divinely wrapped around the defined shapes of his muscles, letting a few black strands of ink peek from under his collar. My thoughts suddenly began scrambling with lightning speed to the point where I was beginning to question if he looked better with his clothes off or on.

His Elite genes were glinting through the elegant outfit, sending out melting energy that seemed to be having a devastating effect between my hips. He was hypnotizingly attractive, the wolf dressed in sheep’s clothes, ready to impress any female audience. He was going in for the kill, and if that wouldn’t get them to support Ferris, I don’t know what would.

‘You could join me. My mother has to have something that you could wear.’ Cole was examining my leather skirt that was miles away from anything someone could wear to an Elite brunch. They were all too goodie-two-shoes for that, much more related to the society-clubs stuck-up vibe than to my modern dress-to-kill trend.

‘No, thanks. I’ll pass on this one. Besides, I wouldn’t want to deflect the attention coming your way. Plus, seeing you flirting with an eighty-year-old would definitely ruin my day.’

‘Fifty is my limit. I prefer milfs to mummies.’ He probably considered himself to be funny.

‘Then I should probably go flirt with a sugar daddy myself.’ I had to strike back.

But I never thought it would backfire so fast. ‘I thought Ferris was your sugar daddy.’ His tone was a little too stingy for my liking.

‘And I thought my deal with Ferris didn’t bother you. I have my reasons for doing this, and you know it.’

‘It doesn’t bother me. I guess I’m just stressed because I have to spend my day acting nice.’

‘And that’s such an awful thing for you to do.’ I rolled my eyes to the back of my head. Cole might have some attributes, but being nice wasn’t one of them.

‘Pretty fucked up on my end.’ He finished arranging his final strand of jet-black hair into a perfect stilled back haircut. ‘And speaking about Ferris, I think you should go easier with him. He’s not going through a good time.’

‘And you think I am?’ Great, Cole was clearly choosing sides when it came to his friends and me.

‘You seemed to be having a pretty good time last night.’ The arrogance lurking within him surfaced.

‘You can’t fix everything with your magic dick.’

‘So you finally admit it’s magic and made your first step into not being a prude. Win-win on my side.’ He was starting to get on my nerves. I guess the time spent with Cole always has to have a limit so that I won’t feel the need to choke him to death.

‘I have to go to Nat and Sebastian. Have fun seducing the oldies.’ I kissed him goodbye, then walked straight out the door before he would get a chance to go into who knows what subject.

‘I’ll try swinging by after I’m done here.’ He made sure to let me know we were still on for the rest of the day, although his new fans didn’t seem to agree. The brunch extended into lunch and the lunch into dinner since nothing could stand in the way of good gossip and rich people preening on their latest purchases.

Despite my power of self-conviction, I felt a little off becauseCole couldn’t join us for the day. I kind of got used to having him around, and no matter how much I tried to avoid the feeling, his presence was missed.

I caught up on some family time, managing to also get to bed early. My siblings had an earlier curfew than my usual bedtime. That made me roll between the sheets two hours before my usual schedule.

Not that I could ever get enough sleep.

I planned a surprise visit to Brax’s office the next day, and I was starting to believe I would need all energy I could get.

I think it was well past midnight when an excruciating sound echoed through every brick of the mansion, waking me up with my own cry out of panic.

I wished it was just another of the nights when I could ignore it, but I knew that time eventually had to come to an end. I could no longer remain in bed and listen to Ferris’s nightmares take him to the verge of sanity.

Yes, a part of me hated him, but there was also a part that felt responsible for sending him deeper into the hell he’d created for himself.

Without even realizing it, my feet were already carrying me through the dim-lit lobbies, closer and closer to the darkness that seemed to be calling my very own name. Once again, I was breaking every single step of the plan I had regarding him. But when it came to Ferris, I always had to expect the unpredictable.

A lump in my throat was almost preventing me from breathing as I found myself in front of the door that I dreaded most to open. The place still preserved the broken memories of a beautiful dream that took a plunge straight from the edge of the world.

He was still asleep when I got there. Well, as much as his nightmares allowed him to be, swirling between the sheets as tormenting thick black clouds of madness were hovering over his world.
