‘Do you even care? Or are you just asking random questions?’ My tongue was sharper than ever, fueled by all the previous intentions he ever had of breaking me.

This time it was he who didn’t answer. It didn’t mean that it would get me to keep my mouth shut. ‘I’m not the pretty face you dream of, Brax. I am sure you can find a replacement for me, at least until I recover.’

He wanted a toy, and that’s exactly what I was. His toy that got severely damaged, and now had to spend some time in the repair shop.

My tone didn’t seem to agree with him. But I wasn’t, in any case, going to watch out for hisfeelings. He didn’t have any, to begin with. ‘Get out, please,’ I murmured a request that made perfect sense. I couldn’tservehim in those moments, because of my wounds, and it wasn’t the right time to talk about any kind of plan, at least not before I could get myself together and function properly.

Things were simple; neither of us could take any action regarding the deal at that time. And since thedealwas the only thing keeping us together, he could just as well find a better use for his time.

It seemed I didn’t need to explain word by word what I meant as in the next instant, he was heading toward the door. ‘I’m going to find Ferris.’

‘What the hell was that about?’ Cole decided to ask, probably confused about the lack of an actual reaction from Brax. I’m sure he had people killed for a lot less than that.

‘I can’t give him what he wants right now, so he has no reason to be here.’ I explained what should have been simple math in my book.

‘You think you have us all figured out.”— I seemed to be amusing Cole again.

‘It’s primal instincts. There’s not that much that needs figuring out.’

‘Oh really? So primal instincts made him live in the hospital lobby for four days until we brought you home?’

I wasn’t expecting things to pan out like that, but it didn’t mean Brax managed to redeem himself in any way. He was just looking after his property the same way people protect a piece of real estate.

‘Maybe he felt he was losing his investment. How am I supposed to know? Brax always has an ulterior motive. You should know this by now.’ I was still denying any sign that Brax could ever act like a human being and show sympathy without having something to gain in return.

‘Look, I’m not defending him, because Brax is... Brax. Besides, he can defend himself if needed. But he doesn’t always have an ulterior reason. And I’m living proof of that.’

Cole made a point since Brax seemed to be his protector, but I, for one, wasn’t going to fall down that rabbit hole again. ‘Well, I’m living proof of exactly the opposite. So, spare me the drama.’

‘When did you become so bitchy?’

‘It comes with the crown.’ I smiled bitterly, reminding him that he was the one who pushed me down this road.

Be careful what you wish for, Cole.

‘Sowhatabout my family?’ I continued. ‘When can I see them?’

‘I think you should wait at least a day until you can walk on your own. The doctor said no shocks or stressful situations for Seb. And I think seeing you crawling or having me as your human crutch would be stressful enough.’

‘Okay.’ I nodded, although, for some reason, my eyes filled with uncontrolled tears. I guess the situation was making me more emotional than usual.

My state of mind wasn’t left without a reaction from Cole, who leaned over to bury his face in my hair again, resting his head on my shoulder. ‘It’s going to be okay, Mouse.’ He kept kissing the words somewhere on my neck while his body made room next to mine on the bed.

His gesture— far from being sexual, was much more connected to an attempt to offer comfort as the warmth he was emanating against my body was creating a feeling of safety.

And that’s exactly what I needed. To feel safe.

I spent more than a few minutes bathing in his scent. He felt different. Good different. So good that I needed to bring an arm over his back and get him as humanly close to me as I could.

Too bad I forgot about my fragile condition. The innocent movement brought an excruciating pain somewhere below my breasts that yanked a cry out of me.

‘Slow down. I know you can’t resist me, but you still have a few broken ribs.’ He raised his body to arrange himself closer to me, though this time with his arms wrapping around me.

It was the fear that was still vivid inside of me that was making me want him there. Or maybe it was something else too. But I wasn’t ready to allow that. I just wanted him to… ‘Stay,’ I breathed as I was beginning to dread the moment he would let go. ‘I won’t tell anyone if you won’t.’

‘Tell them what?’ he asked, running his hand through thick locks of my hair.

‘That you have a decent bone in your body.’ I nestled my head against his own.
