‘Home sweet home,’ he spoke ironically while parking the car, and then came to my assistance so I didn’t slip on the ice that just formed on the steps that lead to the main door of the house.

His mother seemed ecstatic to see us, rushing to stuff us with appetizers and home-baked cookies.

But my king didn’t seem to agree. ‘Since we needed to let go of our cook, my mother has turned into a chef. I told her we could get a new one, but she decided she should continue to torture us.’

‘Watch your mouth, or I’ll have you grounded.’ Ms. Clayborne was actually scolding him like a kid.

Pretty fun to watch if you ask me.

‘Don’t you think I’m too old for you to ground me? Besides, at this point, my room would be a blessing.’ He spat out a nutshell from one of the cookies he had just tasted. ‘Though I’m starting to think you’re sending me to the dentist and not my room.’

‘You’re not going anywhere. Dinner will be ready soon.

‘I also wanted to wait for your father, but he’s not answering his phone.’

‘What do you mean he’s not answering his phone?’ Cole’s countenance didn’t show off any kind of worry, despite the tension brewing in the city.

It showed anger.

An almost composed outrage that got him to instantly head towards the exit. ‘Bea, I have to go out for a moment. I’ll be right back.’

Abandoning me again with his mother, he stormed through the door, racing to his car.

‘What happened?’ I knew it wasn’t polite to interfere, yet I couldn’t help but ask his mother.

‘I’m not sure, but it looks like we’re having dinner together. Just the two of us.’

‘Cole said he will return.’

‘If he went after his father, it may take a while. My husband is having some troubles lately.’

Gambling troubles, although I couldn’t tell her I knew.

I just nodded and helped her set the table, waiting for a few more minutes for dinner to be ready.

‘You should come by more often, now that you feel better.’ Her words struck me like lightning.

What exactly did she know?

I felt I should have gone through some kind of instruction before paying a home visit to Cole’s residence.

‘He told you I was in the hospital?’ I was surprised that he would talk about me with his mother.

‘Well, I didn’t see him for almost a week, so he was forced to.’

An odd pause followed since I didn’t know exactly what Cole had told her.

Did he make something up, or did he tell her what really happened?

My doubt made me look like a fool. I could barely open my mouth to talk, stumbling on every word, ‘I’m... I’m sorry he got you to worry about him.’

‘I was also worried about you. Your pneumonia seemed serious.’

Pneumonia... phew, that’s what it was.

‘My son slept at the hospital every night,’ she continued, exposing all her son’s deepest secrets. ‘Despite the appearances, Cole is an introvert.’

‘An introvert?’ I burst into laughter.
