No need to mention that we stuffed our faces until we could barely walk back to my room. Jenna decided to bring along some of her new cake friends from the rotating display, just in case there would be a slim chance of having a few more bites without fainting.
I was searching my dressing room for a new set of pajamas for her to wear when a knock on the door interrupted me.
My first instinct was to tell Jenna to open the door and let whoever it was in, but if she could handle Cole and even Ferris, with Brax, it was a whole other deal.
‘Come in.’ I rushed out of the dressing room to see who was visiting me. ‘Ferris!’ I couldn’t hide my surprise, especially since he didn’t like interacting with other people, except for his close circle of friends.
Maybe that changed somehow. ‘Guess what I brought you two,’ he said with both hands behind his back.
‘I’m a little nervous when it comes to your gifts,’ I whispered, tearing off a laugh as I was just remembering how he gifted me the phone and, a few days later, the little vibratingthingy.
‘This one is innocent. I promise. Not sure about the next one though.’ He chuckled, bringing his hands to the front, along with a brown paper bag.
‘I recognize that bag! But how?’ I was surprised he remembered the small cake shop we visited during our road trip in the Pit.
‘I went in the Pit, to one of Brax’s clubs. He needed some cash for... you know.’Paying the Annelids leaders to keep low and let my kings take power.I got the message even if he couldn’t say the rest of the sentence out loud with Jenna there. Best friend or not, it was something too important to risk.
‘Brax’s clubs?’ My mind raced straight to the room with a glass wall. The thought of Ferris going there was having an unwanted effect on me.
And that could be easily observed in my facial expressions since he immediately offered to clear things out. ‘I know what you’re thinking. I didn’t go to the basement.’
Ferris was a mind reader, after all.
‘Now open it. I got the best ones.’ He waved the bag in front of my hungry eyes.
‘I’m surprised there’s even something left in the bag.’ I laughed, snatching the paper bag to see what he had brought us.
‘Let’s just call it bag number four.’ Ferris rolled his eyes. ‘Alfred and Cole were also on my list.’
‘There’s still one unaccounted for.’ I laughed, knowing exactly where those cakes went to.
‘I lost that on the way to my car.’
‘You still have some strawberry frosting on your nose.’ I was only fooling around, but that didn’t mean he didn’t check, running his hand over his face. ‘Got you!’
‘You think you’re funny? Just wait until I get you alone.’ He was making a threat. One that I couldn’t help but look forward to.
Unfortunately, his teasing made Jenna feel awkward. ‘I don’t want to be imposing.’
‘You’re not imposing,’ he rushed to explain himself. ‘As a matter of fact, I wanted to talk to you about something.’
‘To me?’ Jenna was stuttering. She seemed confused about what Ferris had to say. And so was I.
‘Yes, to you. Bea told me your father lost his job.’
‘Yes... The company where he used to work shut down.’ I could still read the sorrow in her eyes as she spoke. Life’s difficulties had become so big that she’d begun to accept them as a daily routine.
‘Maybe I could fix that somehow. Call him to go to Ayers Enterprises in the morning— the HR department. I’m pretty positive that they will find something for him there.’
‘You would do that?’ The surprise in Jenna’s voice betrayed the fact that life didn’t give her many opportunities like the one Ferris was presenting.
‘Just make sure he votes for the right man.’ Ferris cast off a benevolent smile, trying to make her think that it was a trade and not an act of charity.
But I knew better than that. And that’s exactly why I jumped around his neck to merge my lips with his. ‘You’re a good man.’
‘No, I’m. I’m actually expectingyouto pay me back for my good deed,’ he said, biting my lower lip.
‘All these threats, Mr. Ayers… I need to see them put into practice,’ I whispered back.
