‘Don’t test me. I’ll kill her before you’ll get a chance to pull the trigger.’ My father was reaching new levels of madness with each new second, pushing everything into a frightening carousel of life and death.

‘I said, drop it.’ Cole was going to keep good on his threat as the gun came even closer to my father’s skull.

And I prayed that he would pull the trigger to avenge all the people he wronged.

‘Okay. I’ll put it on the ground. Slowly,’ my father spoke, leaning to place the metal weapon on the ground.

The gesture surprised me.

The madness scribbled in his eyes would never let him give up on his goal. Though before I came to my senses to warn my king about a possible side plan, my father turned to knock Cole’s revolver away from his hand.

My father’s gun never touched the ground, remaining tightly between his fingers.

I couldn’t see a thing except for Cole trying to seize control, but none of their motions were betraying an outcome. And I knew exactly the outcome I desperately needed. As shocking as it may sound, I wanted my father dead.

Taking my eyes off them for a second, I reached for Cole’s gun. The weapon had flown straight under a prayer bench, making it almost impossible to be recovered without going straight through the two of them fighting.

With unnatural powers, I threw myself on the ground, trying to squeeze between the benches and somehow stretch my arm to get the weapon. Yet nothing could have prepared me for what was to come.

The adrenaline of the moment turned hectic.

I had the gun in my hands.

But at the same time, a loud sound filled the room.

Bang!

It was all it took to change my world.

I remembered how I kept looking with horror, trying to discern what had happened.

But time doesn’t wait for anyone.

Distance was created between my father and Cole, and although my father’s clothes were stained with red drops of blood, it was Cole’s eyes that were betraying a morbid stillness.

A new nightmare was coming to life in those moments, complemented by an unprecedented urge to kill.

Without wasting any more time, I pointed the gun that I had just recovered from the ground at my so-called parent and shot.

Anotherbangechoed between the walls.

A missed fire.

A mistake that gave him enough time to run away.

I emptied the gun magazine in his direction, with the same killer blood that ran through his veins.

Useless.

I could only see him seeking shelter within the dark corners of the chapel until the last shot fired had chased him through the door.

The adrenaline was setting in, empowering the fear of looking down to see Cole.

I just wished to prolong the unavoidable, but the pure desperation running through my veins instantly sent me to hover over him.

‘Cole, stay with me.’ I searched for his powerless hand, praying that I could give him the strength he needed to hold on.

His lips tried to move, yet no words managed to come out, just random syllables trying to form a confession I already knew.
