They sure seemed to have reorientated for new funding quickly enough.

‘Let him pass,’ the man continued, knowing exactly what the consequences of such an attack could be.

‘If this happens again, you’re not going to war with the Elite. You’re going to go to war with me.’ I found it only fair to give them a warning as I couldn’t condone such behavior in my playground.

I wasn’t going to wait for an answer. I said what they needed to hear and they knew that I was deadly serious.

In just a few seconds, I was back behind my wheel, following my agenda for the night. Though not without acknowledging the danger that was lurking on us all.

From where I saw things, there was an impending war brewing in the Pit, and if I could overlook the earlier incident, I couldn’t look the other way knowing that my whole way of living could be endangered.

One way or the other, I needed to end this. I was going to begin working on that aspect as soon as I finished my deal with Bea. And I was finally getting to that part of the night, parking my car in front of her apartment building.

‘Brax!?’ She seemed surprised to find me in front of her door. But not as surprised as I was by the opulence surrounding me. Sure, we were in the Hills after all, but everything in the building screamed top luxury.

That could only mean she had a deal with some big shot from around the place. All the reason to never open the file sitting on the desk that I had on her. I didn’t care who or when she was seeing, as long as I was going to receive what I came to her place for. Information is power, but in her case, it would only complicate things, and I managed to do an amazing job at that without the information about what she’s been doing at The Pleasure Room.

Still, I needed to make sure she wasn’t with company, especially since my visit was unannounced. ‘Were you expecting someone else?’ Not that I really cared but my fists were already damaged enough for the day.

‘No... I wasn’t expecting anyone. Not even you. Maybe I was expecting your car or a phone call, but certainly not you.’ She was barely breathing the words as she was planning out her next move. While her next move should have been obvious — inviting me in.

There was something so familiar about her place, but couldn’t put my finger on it. Like I have seen it in a different style before. Though my mind wasn’t really on architecture at the time.

Bea finally came to her senses, letting me inside the apartment so I could explain the reason for my visit. I had come for my payment like a devil comes to claim a mortal soul. Our agreement was soon approaching its end and it seemed only fair not to drag things out after her reunion with her family.

She understood why I was there, and despite the fact that I knew exactly what I needed to do, I suddenly felt nervous.

Nothing that a drink couldn’t fix. And that’s exactly why I had asked her for one, convincingher to join me for a glass of vodka.

I wished I could have been more relaxed about things, but I felt as if the place was putting a strange pressure on me, turning the slight curiosity I had about her other deal into a kind of envy.

‘Who’s the lucky man?’ A question that I wished I hadn’t asked, yet one that was tormenting me.

She didn’t give me an answer since she was either protecting herself, or the man paying her bills.

And as I came to think about it, I didn’t even care. It was just a momentary weakness set out to fuck with my mind again.

Shaking my head, I imagined I could dismiss my thoughts the way you cast away a bug that wandered on your body. Although the tormenting ideas remained to mess with my reasoning while Bea seemed to have concerns of her own regarding her family, or maybe just my real intentions. ‘I was expecting to see them...before...’

‘Before I get to have you? Is that it? You don’t trust me, is that it?’I felt offended. Maybe I had pushed the boundaries of our agreement, but I was determined to see it through and fulfill my part. I was a man of my word.

‘I...I do. I just want to know they’re safe.’ From the scared tone of her voice, I knew she realized her mouth spoke before her brain again. As I came to discover, it was a trait that defined her.

‘I’ll make sure they’re safe no matter what. That’s a promise I’m willing to make to you.’ I never made promises I couldn’t keep, and I wasn’t going to start with her.

In just one move, I left no distance between us, burning through her with the intensity of my gaze. I wanted her to know what was coming next. ‘I need this now. I may not return to claim my prize.’ I pushed the collar of her robe off one of her shoulders, exposing half a cleavage.

‘You’re going with them?’ she uttered with a startled voice.

Did she not think I had it in me to go on the mission?

‘If you want something done right, you’d better do it yourself. And this has to be done right!’ It was my strongest policy. The guideline that kept me on top.

‘So, I guess we won’t be seeing each other after this.’ I could sense an embarrassed sorrow in her tone, but I couldn’t understand why.

I chose not to give it any visible importance, trying to steer my attitude to a much more arrogant one. ‘You will come searching for me.’

‘Brax... I won’t, and you know it.’ Yes, I knew it. It was the last day I had with her. And it was for the best that way.
