And I was right to leave the bed. Reports were incoming from everywhere as everyone was on the lookout, though with no piece of useful information, except that the gun was abandoned in a trashcan. The news, or more likely lack of it, was draining me of the last of my patience, forcing me back to the street to search for intel my way. There wasn’t much that I could do at the mansion anyway since as soon as she woke up, Bea decided to have some time on her own and locked herself into her room.

She remained there for the next couple of days during which time I had turned the city upside down without any result. It was like no one knew anything, no matter how deep I’d been digging or how far I pushed them.

The gun turned out to be a dead end, while the description wasn’t doing much better either. I felt fucking trapped like a mouse in a cage, though it didn’t mean my men weren’t still trying to get to the bottom of things.

I haven’t been doing anything else lately except digging around for information. I only realized that on the day of the funeral when I needed to stop and return to Ferris’s place to be there for Bea.

It hurt to see her so broken over what had happened, and it was hurting me even more knowing that the next few hours weren’t going to be easy on any of us. But it wasn’t like I had any other option, we needed to attend the funeral, even if I would have kept Bea under lockdown until either I would find the person responsible or burned the city trying.

The three of us were there for her, and if Cole convinced her to open the door, I was the one aiding her to get dressed and then escorted her to the limo that was to take us to the funeral.

I couldn’t attend the chapel ceremony. I wouldn’t have known what to say anyway. Cole and Ferris were doing a much better job than I could have done while I was playing my part in securing the area and having my men check everyone who was coming to pay their respects.

There were many more people than I anticipated, and that was making me and my men’s job much more difficult. But by the time the crowd began moving towards the graveyard, we had pretty much everyone sorted out. That didn’t mean people weren’t still arriving. Every minute was bringing along a new presence and implicitly a new security check.

It was a fucking security nightmare and to top it all, we were at a fucking graveyard. The place gave me the creeps. I kept watching my phone to see how much longer we needed to remain there as I couldn’t tell what was happening with the funeral because I had to pay attention to so many aspects.

Though one thing I always made sure to check — Bea. My eyes were pointing her way every chance I got, and last time I looked her way, she was talking to Ferris. She was safe and that was all I needed to know.

My phone suddenly lit up. One of my informants was calling me with some new piece of information. They had finally got a lead on the weapon. A guy that knew a guy that knew another guy pulled through and connected the dealer who sold that kind of gun in the city to a person I had already been introduced to — Bea’s father.

My sight went straight to Bea as my heart skipped a beat. She was still with Ferris, but I found it only fair she would learn the news as soon as possible. I signaled my guards, along with Ferris and Bea, to gather around so I could share the new information and instruct my men of who to look for.

But things didn’t happen the way I planned. Just before all my bodyguards could gather, Jenna’s mom collapsed to the ground from the emotional stress. The madness began as people were starting to move like ants, creating a commotion around the unconscious woman.

Maybe I might sound cruel, but I didn’t give a fuck about them. All I cared about was Bea, and in those seconds, she wasn’t anywhere to be seen.

My eyes kept scanning through the crowd trying to find her and Ferris, but there were so many people to cover while everyone was dressed in the same fucking color.

My sight narrowed, trying to lock in on them, though before I could spot them, Ferris’s voice broke through the crowd from somewhere behind me. ‘Bea’s gone.’

That’s all that took for the nightmare to begin.

Without any other explanations or warning, Ferris started running to search for her, and I instantly signaled my men to do the same.

We scattered through the tombstones and small crypts, trying to cover as much ground as we could, but we were standing in the Elite graveyard and the place was an endless maze.

Suddenly, a loud sound broke through the buzz that was already vibrating in my ears. A gunshot sound that split my world in two, bringing me to the verge of madness. The noise came from somewhere in front of me and as I looked around, I was the closest to its origins.

I began running that way, but only after a few meters, more gunshot sounds followed setting me in full panic mode.

Somewhere along the way, my coat fell to the ground. I needed more speed like I couldn’t get there fast enough. And the truth was, I couldn’t.

I was just seconds away from a small chapel when a man ran out of its door, disappearing through tall trees and stone monuments.

My money was that he was Bea’s father and a horrible decision was clouding everything around me. Should I have followed him and ended the bastard or go inside the chapel and see if Bea was okay?

My predatory instincts were set on kill mode, but my heart needed to know she was safe.

Without a second thought, I ran inside the chapel to find an image that instantly ripped through the last of my soul. Bea was hovering over Cole’s body with hot tears knotting under her chin while her hands were pressed tightly onto his chest.

‘He doesn’t have a pulse,’ she cried out as soon as she distinguished my presence in the doorway.

My first impulse was to run inside and see if there was still something I could do, but I immediately remembered noticing a medical crew entering the cemetery gates while I was running this way.

I couldn’t waste time and I was perfectly aware of that. I’d patched more than a few wounds along the way, but I understood that there was nothing I could do to save Cole.

‘I need medical assistance right now!’ I tore towards the doctors, making them turn and run inside the chapel.
