Not to mention what Lev will do when he finds out how we’ve all lied.

CHAPTER TEN

Lev

“The pictures you asked for, Boss” Sergei passes me the file across the dining room table. He is one of the men I assigned to follow Aurora yesterday.

I take the folder, giving a wave of my hand to dismiss him before I go through the contents. It contains images of the woman Aurora went to see. She claimed she went to see her aunt, but this woman is clearly a stranger. Then there’s the matter of the fake address she gave my men. I knew she was up to something the moment she said it. Spotting a liar is one of the most useful skills I have mastered over the years and this simply proves that I was right.

I’m still going through the pictures when Ludis enters the dining room.

“Tell me you have good news,” I tell him with a pointed look.

“Yes, Boss. We have a guy. The one behind the hit on the Spanish shipment.

I grunt in satisfaction. “Who?”

“Some lowlife fucker working for the Mexicans. Seems like he’s been setting up his own operations here in New York. Taking us out is part of the plan.”

“Bring him in,” I say, fingers itching to get hold of the cunt. He’s caused me endless shit.

“Already on it, Boss,” says Ludis. “You’ll have him here in a few hours.”

I relax for the first time in days, though part of me is still reluctant to share my cousin’s confidence in his abilities.

“Does he have a name?” I ask as I flip through the pages of the file in front of me. Despite my relief at Ludis’ report, Aurora still has me preoccupied. It’s a problem I now have to deal with and I don’t fucking like it.

“Julio Estevez,” Ludis answers, and I raise my head. I find him staring at the file containing the pictures. I flip it shut, then clench my fist at the thought of what I’d love to do to this Estevez fucker. He’s going to bleed…and when he does, he’ll tell me who the fuck is behind all this. I know that he isn’t working alone.

I can see Ludis is about to leave, but I raise a hand, causing him to pause a moment. I hold the file out toward him. Since he seemed so interested in it earlier, maybe I can put his curiosity to good use. After all, he’s my second-in-command, while Petrov is away. Who better to ask to delve into my wife’s activities.

“I want you to find out more about this woman,” I tell Ludis. Something flashes in his expression as he flips through the photographs within.

“Who is she?” he asks, glancing up at me.

“Aurora says she’s her aunt,” I say as distaste fills me at the thought of her lies.

“You know that’s not true, right?” he says cautiously.

“Why do you think I’m asking you to look into it?” I snap. “I want you to learn everything about her so we can figure out what the fuck this is about.” I don’t know where my suspicions are leading, but it would be a shame if Aurora tried to stab me in the back. I’ll go to war for her without hesitation, but that doesn’t mean I’ll be blind to her betrayal…if that’s what she’s planning.

“You can count on me, Boss,” Ludis says, holding the folder like it’s a live snake. I don’t want to admit it, but I’m battling a feeling that the contents have the potential to put an end to my world. I can feel it in my gut and I don’t fucking like it.

“Have you gotten details about the auction?” I change the subject, and Ludis nods. “When will it be held?” I ask him.

“In two weeks,” Ludis responds. “The product you’re interested in will definitely be in the line-up.”

“Perfect. I want that MeshMare at all costs. I need every detail about it. Who’ll be there, who else is bidding, what their budgets are,” I tell him. “I’ll double whatever the highest price is.”

I’ve been following the development of MeshMare for weeks, and I’m looking forward to getting my hands on the potent designer drug. Anyone who controls that shit is set to make a killing on the rich kids’ party circuit. It’s a rare chemical cocktail, and only one manufacturer knows the compound. It’s the reason everybody wants to get their hands on it, but that drug is mine.

“The Sicilians are already been making under-the-counter offers but the seller’s not interested,” Ludis says, and I tense. This is the sort of product that would boost a small organization like the Sicilians into the big leagues.

“They can’t be the only ones trying to play smart,” I say.

“You’re right. Word on the street is that the Irish have been digging around.” He pauses when my eyes narrow. I’m not surprised. This new development has gotten every lowlife fucker in town coming out of the woodwork.

“Find everything you can before the auction,” I repeat. “It’ll give us insight into how to handle things.”
