“Why are you leaving?” she asks.
“I have business to wrap up,” I tell her.
“The auction?”
Instantly, I become alert. Every doubt I had dissipates.
I never mentioned the auction to her.
Aurora’s eyes widen. She has most likely realized her slip.
“How do you know about the auction?” I question. Aurora opens and closes her mouth repeatedly. All traces of sleep dissipate.
“You mentioned it,” she blurts, and I feel fury unfurl at her lie.
It’s all a fucking act. I have to keep reminding myself of that. Whatever sweet nothings she whispers, it means nothing. Not to her. And it can’t mean anything to me either. Not if I plan to get out of this unscathed.
I give her a pointed look. She diverts her eyes within seconds.
“Right. I suppose I did,” I say, then watch her visibly relax before she plasters that fake fucking smile back on. “Yes, it is about the auction.” I finish buttoning my shirt, keeping my tone neutral. “I wouldn’t let it get in the way of our time together, but that MeshMare will be a game-changer.”
“MeshMare?” Aurora feigns ignorance, and it angers me.
“A designer drug,” I tell her, reaching for my shoes. I’m about to feed her a ton of bullshit. She has to think that I trust her.
“That’s why you’re going to the auction,” she says.
“Yeah.”
She silently watches me as I finish tying my shoelaces.
“Are you sure it’s safe for you to go there?”
Nice touch.
I want to sneer.
“I know what I’m doing,Solnishko. We go in, get the drug, and get the fuck out of there. I’ll have my best guys with me,” I explain. Aurora’s eyes give nothing away as I keep talking.
“Why are you telling me this?” she asks, seeming puzzled.
“Because I trust you,” I tell her, holding her gaze. She half-smiles in response, and licks her lips.
“Lev, I don’t know if this is a good idea,” she begins, with a puzzled expression glued to her face. “There’s… There’s something I…”
“There’s nothing to worry about,Solnishko,” I cut in and pause. “There is no way you’d tell anyone about it, right?” I ask.
“Of course not,” she says. “Who would I tell anyway?” I notice how quickly her response comes out.
“Good,” I tell her, keeping my eyes on her. “Because nobody else knows about this except for the guys who are coming with me.”
“I… Okay,” she says and I can see her throat move as she swallows. “Just promise me you’ll take care, okay?” She says it with such sincerity, I almost buy into it.
I have to hand it to her, she’s pretty fucking convincing.
