I blink and shake my head. “How do I get in? They have electronic locks on them.”

Jeanie shrugs. “Not sure, hon. He just said it would be open and that you should go wait there.”

Chapter 31

Luke

Myhandsareshakingas I sit in the back of Matteo’s SUV while we make our way to the High Card.

“She’s safe,” Matteo says when we stop at a red light.

“Is she? We still don’t know what that bastard did to her.”

He eases through the light as it turns green and doesn’t say anything else. We’re both thinking of what George Kitchens said to us before I ended him.

“Pratchett plans to let all of his men have a turn with her.”

We’re still no closer to finding out what Pratchett was up to tonight or what drove him to kidnapping Zara, but I aim to find out. Against my better judgment, the senator is still breathing, but I can’t say for sure how much longer that will last.

“Try not to think about that. You saw her tonight. She didn’t seem injured.”

Matteo is right, Zara looked almost like herself, but the makeup was all wrong, and her eyes were tired.

“Is the doctor coming?”

Matteo nods and turns right onto our street. When we pull into the parking lot, Bryce is leaning against the door of his car watching us. Matteo and Bryce haven’t been on the best of terms since he started dating Skylar, but the man does good work for us, so Matteo hasn’t told him to hit the road.

Skylar is still coming around to a relationship with him after coming to terms with the fact that he did nothing to stop their father’s abuse when she was younger, so I suspect things will be tense among the three of them for a while.

I stay out of it, and my only concern right now is that he’s kept anyone else out of the club.

“All is quiet,” he says when I ask him how things are going. “You look like shit, though, man. Might not want to let her see you like that.”

I laugh and clap him on the shoulder. “Thanks for being here. You can take off.”

“Call your sister,” Matteo says gruffly, barely looking him in the eye.

“She’s not taking my calls last I checked. But I’ll try again,” he adds quickly when Matteo glares.

He hops in his car and drives away before anyone can say anything else, and Matteo and I head into the club.

Jeanie is sitting on a sofa crocheting, and I can’t help but laugh at the sight of a woman crocheting in the middle of a BDSM club. But she doesn’t seem put off by her surroundings, so I figure she’s alright.

Matteo approaches her first and offers her a handshake. “You did good tonight, Jeanie. Thank you.”

“Not a problem, Mr. Bennett. Just doing my job.”

“I’d like you to be Zara’s personal driver from now on,” I say. It’s probably as close to a thank you as I can muster right now, because all I can focus on is making sure Zara’s OK.

But as badly as I want to get to her and hold her, I don’t want to go to her until a doctor has checked her out, so I go to my office instead.

“You should at least tell her you’re here.”

“I can’t. Not yet. I’ve got so much pent-up frustration and anger over what happened to her I’m worried I’ll accidentally hurt her.”

Matteo nods. “Fine. I’m going to check on her, though.”
