His face fell, and she knew that answered her question.

She looked away. “Besides, that’s only one of many things that could go wrong. You hardly know me, and I hardly know you. We might not even really like each other in a few months. Dating just isn’t a good idea. In a few months, you might not like me. What if you dump me? I wouldn’t be able to work for you after that.”

“You’ve got a lot of negatives. Do you have any positives to this idea?”

She gave him a gentle smile. “No, because I’m trying to make a point here.”

He glanced at her. “But you should look at the positives to this. You could have an amazing boyfriend.”

She shook her head, trying not to laugh.

Yes, the idea sounded nice. Henry was amazing, and I had a fabulous time with him today, but again this was only the beginning. We hardly know each other. I don’t know his deepest darkest secrets, and I still have no answer to his weird behavior.

For all she knew, he was a drug dealer, and she couldn’t put herself in the position of dating a drug dealer. No matter how handsome he was.

“Henry, I’m trying to be nice about this. Think about it. Seriously for a second. Stop and think about the whole of it.”

“I have.”

“Have you, though?” She tilted her head. “All of it? Think about Zara. About what’s best for her.”

“I am.” He glanced at Zara in the rearview mirror. “You’re amazing with her, and I know you care about her deeply. I know you wouldn’t hurt her.”

“You don’t know that. I might be an ax murderer for all you know.”

He snorted. “Did you forget I did a background check on you before I hired you?”

She scowled, having forgotten about that. No, she would never hurt Zara, but that wasn’t the point.

“Henry, I’m telling you no.”

“You’re not even giving it a chance.”

“No, I’m not. I’m being rational. I like my job, and I like Zara too much to put that all at risk. I could lose everything.”

“Or you could gain so much.”

“Henry.”

“Think about the kiss we shared. You can’t say that it wasn’t mesmerizing. We clearly clicked.”

She knew they had clicked. They both got along, and the kiss was amazing, but she knew she couldn’t just think about that. They had only known each other for a little while, and she couldn’t fall into bed with him.

“Henry, I’m saying no. Please, drop it.”

She was trying hard to say no because agreeing to it would have been so easy. But she knew life wasn’t like a fairytale. You didn’t just find someone with a snap of your fingers.

She watched Henry tense up, and his jaw hardened. She knew he didn’t like the answer, but she couldn’t cave. She had her reasons, and they were good and solid.

She wanted to change the subject.

“So, the tiger in the woods. Is that something I should be concerned about?”

He glanced at her and then back towards the road. “If you stay in the house, there is nothing to worry about.”

“But I can’t be cooped up in the house for twenty-four hours a day. So, is it something I need to be concerned about?”

He chuckled at her. “Well, there are a lot of animals in the woods. Bears, lions, tigers, and even dragons, if you look hard enough. But they are pretty hard to find.”
