They headed downtown, where he once more pushed the stroller, allowing Kirsten some freedom. He also wanted to spend time with Zara since he’d been so busy the past few days.

He pushed the stroller from store to store while Kirsten splurged.

“I swear I don’t shop like this,” she said while they walked across the street. She had a handful of bags from four different shops. “We never had anything like this back in my hometown. I couldn’t ever find anything to my taste.”

He chuckled, shaking his head. “Kirsten, you’re allowed to spend your money however you want. I don’t care what it’s on.”

“I know.” She nodded her head. “But I don’t want you to think I’m a shopaholic.”

He snorted, pushing the stroller back up the sidewalk. “You work hard for your money. You can do what you like with it.” He gave her a soft smile, and she blushed.

All day they had been talking, and it felt nice. She was laughing at his jokes and would bat her eyelashes at him. It made him think of being on a date, and he hoped it was like this if they ever did go on one.

They stopped in front of a restaurant. Kirsten looked at the sign. “This place looks nice for dinner.”

So, they went inside and got seated. It was a fancier restaurant, but neither of them cared. They were too hungry after all the walking.

After they ate and piled back into the truck once more, they headed home. It was getting late, and the sun was just beginning to set. He looked at Kirsten, realizing something.

Kirsten is human, Henry. She is someone that wants to be courted. She isn’t like shifters, who just fuck.

He knew that but didn’t realize the full extent of it. Today was a clear example of that. She had really enjoyed herself.

Kirsten flipped through her phone, and he glanced out at the road. “Kirsten, would you want to go on a date with me?”

Her head whipped towards him. “What?”

“Would you like to go on a date?”

She sat there frozen, and he took a deep breath in.

“A date,” he repeated. “We could try and see how it goes. What do you say?”

NINE

KIRSTEN

She was stunned by the question, and it wasn’t because she didn’t think there was a possibility of it coming up. She knew he was interested in her, but she was reserved about the idea.

We can’t date. He’s my boss.

She liked him. She really liked him, and she found him attractive, but she knew the idea wasn’t the smartest. Anything could go wrong, and if it did, how was she to work for him? He’d fire her, and she’d be back at square one again.

No. You can’t date. It’s too complicated. As much as you like him, and as hot as you think he is, it’s not a good idea.

Besides, she really liked Zara, and she didn’t want to lose her. She’d grown to enjoy how she giggled and the way her eyes looked at her like she was an angel. She didn’t want to lose that.

“Henry … I have worked in school settings for years, and it has always been clear that having any type of a personal relationship with either parent is strongly frowned upon. When something goes wrong, the drama from the adults tends to have a negative effect on the child.”

“Just give me a second to explain,” he begged, giving her a cute, pleading gaze. She knew where Zara had gotten them now.

“I know the idea isn’t usual, considering you work for me, but imagine how amazing it could be. We click.”

She scowled at him. “Henry, I think you’re missing all the other issues. If it doesn’t work out, I could lose my job.”

“How?”

She crossed her arms, not understanding how he didn’t see the problem. “You would still want me even if I rejected you? Really?”
