After hours of searching and a long phone call about the cameras, he arrived home feeling defeated. He’d gotten himself nowhere today, and he felt like a wreck.

He walked into the house and froze when he saw Kirsten waiting by the door. She was holding a pile of laundry and tilted her head. She examined him and then pulled her eyes up.

“You’re covered in cat hair.”

He looked down, seeing she had a point.

“I was outside with Malley.” It was the quickest lie he could think of, and he could only hope that Malley wasn’t inside the house.

Kirsten narrowed her eyes slightly, and his throat went dry.

He hated to lie to her and honestly would rather tell her the truth, but he couldn’t right now. She still hardly knew him, and if she found out now, she might leave.

He didn’t want to lose her.

“She kept rubbing on me,” he added, rubbing his neck. “Couldn’t get much work done. I spent most of my time on the phone.”

She chuckled, shaking her head. “Well, isn’t Malley so sweet to leave all her fur on you?”

He nodded his head and gave her a smile. “Yes, I’m going to shower before dinner.”

He slipped past her and looked down at his shirt. He frowned. Malley’s fur wasn’t even close to the same color as the fur on his shirt. He could only hope that Kirsten didn’t notice.

FIVE

KIRSTEN

She didn’t want to admit that she had been spying, but that was exactly what she had been doing. She’d watched Henry leave quickly on several occasions over the past week, and she found it odd.

Sure, everyone had something they did that was weird, but nothing like this, and it worried her. The way he was acting made it hard for her to trust him.

I want to trust him, and I want to be able to believe that everything that’s going on at this house is fine, but I can’t just take that at face value. I hardly know the man.

She wanted to know what was going on, but she knew she couldn’t just ask him. They didn’t know each other well enough for that.

But you also need to know what’s happening and if he’s doing something illegal. You could be charged because you are the nanny. You can’t just sit and act like you never saw anything odd.

She took a deep breath, watching as Henry finished his breakfast. She was burping Zara again, holding her tightly. She’d grown to like the baby, and she hated the worry in her head.

It would be terrible if Henry was caught doing something illegal and Zara was taken away. She’s too little to have to go through something like that.

“You’re in deep thought over there,” Henry said, breaking the silence. His plate was empty now, and he was placing it into the sink.

She forced a smile. “Just thinking, is all. Are you going out to work?”

It was his morning routine. He’d get up early, have his breakfast and leave. Sometimes he would leave before breakfast and come back, but he was gone most of the day lately. It only made her worry more.

He never came home full of sawdust as she’d seen him do before, and she wasn’t stupid. She knew he was covered in cat hair the other night, but it wasn’t the same shade as Malley.

She didn’t want to say he was lying, but he was. She could tell, and she didn’t like it. It only made her even more worried that he was a criminal. Why wouldn’t he just tell her the truth? Only people with something to hide lied.

“Yeah, I have a project I need to wrap up. Hopefully, it doesn’t take me all day.”

She held back her frustration and gave him a nod. “Alright, well, if you have time, I was going to have a picnic outside with Zara later when it gets lighter out. Get her some fresh air.”

He gave her a smile and kissed Zara before he slipped out of the house. She watched him walk for a moment, stirring over her idea.

She didn’t want to follow him, but she was weak this morning. She had wrapped Zara in a Maya wrap and kept her snuggled up because she fully intended on seeing where Henry was going. She needed to for her own safety. The thought had occurred to her to see if Jana would watch her for a few minutes, but she remembered that Henry said watching Zara was not in Jana’s duties, so she was going to take the little rug rat with her.
