“What do you want?” I ask suspiciously. There’s no valid reason I can think of that he’d be standing here trying to talk to me, if not to somehow do Theodore’s bidding, and since the latter isn’t anywhere in the vicinity, I’m assuming that’s not it.

“I deserve that, huh?”

“Yup, sure do,” I tell him, tugging at the hem of my grey hoodie and keeping my gaze on his black t-shirt. “But seriously, what do you want? This is super weird, dude.”

Laughing, he drops onto the balls of his feet, stepping into me. “Yeah, a little.”

I wait a moment, but he says nothing more, so I continue walking. He catches up easily, his long legs falling in step with mine.

“You heading home next weekend?”

I crane my neck, my face wrinkling in confusion when I look at him. “Nope. Why?”

“Just wondered, the rents are hosting a gala event for the academy.”

“Because the billionaires need to somehow raise money,” I retort dryly. This whole thing is weird as fuck, and I’m confused by why he’s even bothering to talk to me. I’m never invited to anything relating to the heirs and the businesses our parents have a hand in.

I’m expected to take over for my father one day, but at this current moment, I have no idea what it is he actually does for work.

“Right,” Kyle agrees, his mouth turning down.

“This is me,” I tell him, coming to a stop outside of my classroom. He continues to stare at me, saying nothing as the silence drags on.

Awkward.

“Right,” he repeats, a wry smile on his face. “I’ll see you later, then.”

He stalks off, leaving me in a funk.

Kyle was always the nice one out of the guys. If you wanted cheering up, or needed to see a friendly face, he was the one you’d go to. Now, it feels weird and uncomfortable to be around him.

I watch him as he walks down the hallway, my brow furrowed.

The door behind me opens and a kind voice speaks out, “Are you in this class?”

I turn to face the teacher, taking a deep breath and forcing myself to smile.

“Hey, Fallon.” Adam, a guy from my business law class, slides into the seat beside me, placing his dinner on the table. I turn towards him, curious as to why on earth he’s chosen to sit here when there’s plenty of empty spaces in the hall.

He must see the confusion on my face, as he speaks again. “You looked lonely.”

Okay.

I mean, yes, I’m sitting alone since Betty is in the library, where she’s been spending most of her time recently, and Noah is off doing something football related. Not that I could tell you what it is since I switched off when he was telling me about it.

Though I can’t say I’m lonely.

I’m happy for these quiet moments.

I love my friends, but when you live with one another and spend the majority of your time together, sometimes you want to sit and eat in peace and quiet.

The dining hall is close to empty, since the weather is actually being kind today and it has stopped raining, so a lot of the students are making the most of that and eating outside on one of the fields that has been set up with picnic tables.

It’s nice to not have to talk, or to have to avoid the constant stares from people who assume to know your business.

“Cool,” I say, before tucking back into my sandwich.

We eat in silence, both finishing our meals. I’m about to leave when he stops me.
