"You talked about telling some of your friends to help us. Is that going to be possible?"

Fena rises to her feet. "Yes but we can also do something else for you."

"What's that?"

"Hide you so your brothers don't ever pick up your scent.” Fena turns to face me, her face somber. “Forget this mission and join us."

I shoot to my feet. Join the Blood Borns? I'm not sure Luke would approve of that, and at the same time, I don't know what I'm getting into renouncing my pack and joining another. Is there some ancient repercussion for pack renegades?

"Uh, I...I don't know what to say. I guess I'll think about that."

Fena cocks an eyebrow at me. "So, you won't fight your brothers?"

"If Luke fights them, I will. But maybe you're right. Maybe we should forget about this and join the pack. Luke's scent is all over the cellar. I'm sure my brothers are looking for him now."

Fena slaps me on the shoulder. "Whatever you choose to do, remember you've got a future too. Don't throw it away."

With that, the female wolf walks out of the cabin, leaving me to the heartbreaking reality of Luke's stubbornness.

Chapter19

Luke

Istep into the rain.

The icy torrent washes over me, surprisingly calming me. As shifters, we don't get affected by cold or heat. Our bodies are known to withstand any weather and so the heavy rain has nothing on me. I just want it to pour on me and hopefully subdue this anger boiling inside me.

Fight alongside me? Hell no! I almost lost Adeline. I'm not losing her again. Lawrence and his brothers will kill her when they get a hold of her. There will be no cellar this time and no chain holding her to the wall. Being starved would be the least of Adeline's problems because they won't even spare her to remember what it means to be hungry.

But she won't listen. Adeline must think she's protecting me by trying to get involved. I'm the one protecting her. This is bigger than she thinks, more dangerous than she feels.

"Stop being a selfish bigot, Luke," Fena speaks behind me.

I wheel around to see her standing on the verandah, her hands in the pockets of her jeans.

"Stay out of this, Fena," I growl.

The rain pelts me now, threatening to trickle into my ears. Shifters may be resistant to unfavorable weather but not the annoying feeling of having water in our eardrums. So I head back to the verandah, dripping all over the floor.

"I should stay out of this?” Fena demands. “Please, like you can last one second without Adeline!"

I flash her a look. "What do you mean?"

"She's going to get real angry with you, Luke, because of your attitude, and instead of losing her to the cold hands of death, you're going to lose her by watching her walk out of your life."

The reality of making Adeline doubt my love for her strikes me now. She thinks I'm going after her pack because it’s always been my goal and not because I'm angry they hurt her.

I don't say anything to Fena but turn around and enter the cabin. Adeline is sitting on the couch now, her face buried in her palms. Her heartbreak touches me and I don't even have to see it in her eyes or on her face. It's there, in the way her shoulders have dropped and her spirit is fracturing.

Without making a sound, I walk up to her, gently go on one knee and hold her by the wrists. Adeline is startled at first but then her teary eyes recognize me and she breaks into a sad smile.

"Luke, I'm sorry, I didn't mean..."

I don't let her finish. "It's okay. I said those things because I don't want to lose you. I want to be by your side forever."

Adeline rubs her runny nose but I don't mind holding that hand again. She's everything I want and even in her weakest moment, I want to be her strength. In her lowest moment, I want to be her highest point.

Tears roll down her cheeks now. "Me too."
