"Rune?" Alistair’s voice came from the doorway. His father finally let go of my hand in the presence of his son, and I sighed gratefully that he was here. The less amount of time that I could ever spend with the Alpha alone, the better.

"I went to look for you at breakfast, but the staff said you’d already eaten," Alistair commented.

He was wearing a dark green shirt that complemented his eyes and his sable hair, and he was dressed in a suit, like he'd just come out of an important meeting…which he probably had. He was frowning as his eyes wandered down my body. "You didn't like the clothes I bought for you?"

I was aware of the Alpha walking back over to his desk, and I decided this was a good conversation to have somewhere else.

I threw out a polite goodbye, and then walked over to Alistair and grabbed his hand, pulling him from the room. His face was faintly amused once we got farther down the hallway. "Was my father mean to you? Is that why you're practically dragging me away?"

"He's just a little intimidating. As you know, I'd only met him once." I stopped, remembering the memory I did have. "Did I take a blood test that night?" I asked with a frown, glancing over to Alistair so I could watch his reaction.

He seemed to shift uncomfortably. "That is something that we do with all matches, to make sure both sides know the bloodline they’re entering a partnership with." The words came out easy, but there was a tightness in his gaze…like there was more to it.

"Was there anything in my blood work that came out concerning?"

He shrugged. "I'm not sure anyone ever discussed the results after you were taken that night." He squeezed my hand. "But that's the last thing I care about after almost losing you. I can say with certainty that your blood and everything else about you is perfect for me."

I shot him a weak smile, because I almost felt bad…because nothing in my heart was saying he was perfect forme.

"Now back to the clothes…Was anything wrong with them? Are they not the right size?"

I tugged at the shirt awkwardly. "I just think that my wolf wants your scent," I offered lamely.

That seemed to work, even if it was a lie. My wolf was actually disgusted at the fact his smell was all over my body.

"Well, as much as I love to see you in my clothes, I'm sure I could get my scent all overyourclothes quite easily," he offered, in a way that would probably sound sexy for most people. He leaned towards me suggestively, and then kissed me, his tongue slipping into my mouth when I opened it in surprise. His kiss was wet, but not in a good way. It was too wet. And our lips seemed all wrong for each other as I tried to respond to his kiss.

He didn't appear to feel the way I did when he finally unlocked his lips from mine. He looked thrilled actually.

"We’re having a dinner party to welcome you back tonight, just a few of my advisors and their mates. Do you think you’re up for that?"

I didn't feel up for that. In fact, I felt a long way from that. But again, it felt like something I needed to do.

"Of course, and I'll make sure to wear one of my dresses. I'm sure it'll be fun."

Were other mates able to read each other better? Would another mate have been able to sense I was uncomfortable? Because Alistair wasn't sensing anything.

Alistair had more meetings, as he’d taken over many of the responsibilities of his father, and I ended up back in my room with a few books he’d had staff pick out from the mansion’s library.

I was dreadfully bored, but it was probably better to stay in the room, then endure more awkward run-ins with members of Alistair's family.

At around four thirty, there was a knock on the door, and I opened it to see a very pretty, snooty woman standing there. She sniffed at the sight of me, like it offended her. She was wearing a skintight dress that was cinched so tight, her breasts almost came up to her chin.

"Alistair’s asked me to help you get ready for the evening," she said, her voice annoyed.

My eyebrows rose, he hadn't made it sound like a fancy event requiring something like that, and the unease in my stomach only grew.

"I don't think I actually need any help," I said, moving to close the door. Her hand shot up and practically banged against the wood.

"I'm afraid I can't disobey his orders. I'm sure I can findsomethingto help you with," she sniffed, her gaze traveling up and down me disdainfully, and I didn’t miss the hidden insult in that sentence.

"Of course," I answered through gritted teeth, finally opening the door so she could come in.

She strode directly towards the bathroom, like she'd been in here a million times, and I stiffened watching the sway of her hips.

Because I suddenly had the sneaking suspicion that shehadbeen here before.

The thought annoyed me, but surprisingly, I didn't feel jealous at all. I felt more insulted than anything else, that he would send one of his past girlfriends, lovers…or whoever she was, to help his mate.
