Anger poured through my veins. "What did you just say?"

His cheek ticked and his grip tightened on his drink. "I didn't mean that."

But I was angry so I didn't let it go, like I had all the other moments when I noticed something was off about him.

"I think you did mean it. You somehow thought that after a year of being tortured I should just eagerly climb into your bed, right? Especially because you don't have Carmen around to keep your sheets warm?"

His gaze hardened. "You know I thought things were going to be different?" he growled. "But maybe that's just how you are. Maybe I've been too nice."

I stared at him, a mixture of horror, confusion, and anger hitting me everywhere. Who was this man? Although I had seen hints of cruelty, thisparticular verson of him was not something I'd seen. I moved to turn around and walk away from him, done with the conversation and thinking he needed time to cool off, but as I swung around, my hand sliced across some thorns on the rosebush I'd backed too close to, and I squeaked as a few drops of blood ran down my hand and disappeared into the soil.

When I looked up from my hand, I realized Alistair had gotten even closer, now just a few steps away.

"What's it going to take to get you to offer that wet pussy to me?"

Without thinking, my hand darted out and I slapped him across the face. He roared in anger and moved to backhand me, but right before he could touch me, a man appeared behind him in a flash, grabbing his wrist and stopping him just a few inches from my face.

Alistair growled in shock and turned towards the stranger…the absurdly handsome stranger might I add. His grip on Alistair's wrist tightened, until I could hear bones breaking as he crushed it in his grip.

Alistair was screaming as his hand was rendered perfectly useless.

"You must be the stupidest ass on this Earth to keep trying to get her when you’ve been marked as a dead man," the stranger said calmly, his tone at odds with the absolute fury flashing in his gaze.

"What do you want?" Alistair cried out, bent over and holding his broken wrist.

But I didn't have to ask him what he wanted. I knew what it was.

The stranger wanted me.

I turned to run and in the blink of an eye, he was standing in front of me. I froze at how fucking fast he was.

"You don't have to be afraid of me, Rune. Everything's going to be alright," he soothed like he was talking to a feral animal.

I tried to punch him, but he caught my wrist before it could land. But unlike what he did with Alistair, his grip was soft, just firm enough to hold me back. "Just give me a couple of minutes with the asshole and we’ll get going," he said, as if we weren't complete strangers and I hadn't just seen him break my mate's wrist.

"Who are you?" I murmured, fear clear in my voice. He winced, like the sound of it had hurt him.

"Just a minute, sweetheart," he said warmly.

I turned to run again, but he didn't seem upset at all, he just snagged me around the waist and laid a hand softly on my cheek. Immediately heat flashed through me, the kind that I'd never even felt an inkling of with Alistair.

“Stay,” he ordered Alistair, who’d started to slink away. Alistair was sweating, fear leaking out of his pores, but he stopped at the man’s command, frozen in place.

My pulse quickened. How had he done that?

“Where’d you get that glamour you’re wearing, Al?” the man spit at Alistair dangerously.

Glamour? What was he talking about?

"Sleep," he suddenly murmured to me, and no sooner had he said the words…and I was out.

I regained consciousness in a car,my cheek pressed against the cold glass as the world passed beyond it. Confused, I shifted in my seat, and turned to look at who else was in the car, only to scream when I saw the gorgeous stranger sitting in the seat next to me. Glancing forward, I realized we were in the back, and there was another man driving the car.

"Let's not scare Armand, baby," he mused, his head tilted as he studied me.

I turned towards the door I was leaning against, frantically trying to open it.
