"Rune," Ares’s voice called from nearby,

I glanced over at him emerging from the woods, that nervous feeling fluttering inside of me. I expected him to look angry or worse…disappointed. But he looked as he always did, kind of cocky, and kind of obsessed.

"There's my girl," he murmured, as he approached and softly stroked his thumb on my cheek.

I was taken aback by his forwardness, because…we definitely hadn’t gotten to that point yet. But he evidently had decided my mating bond with Daxon meant he could be more forward with his feelings. If telling someone they were your blood bond didn't do that in the first place.

Surprisingly, Daxon’s bond was still in my chest. All I could feel was his love for me, no sign of the undying hatred for Ares I was sure he’d felt in the past.

"I didn’t know if you two were ever going to come out," said Ares, and this time there was a tiny bite to his voice.

Daxon coughed, the words "jealous bastard,” coming out as he did so.

Okay, this wasn't as awkward as I thought it was going to be.

"What have you guys been doing?" I asked.

"You mean since the mysterious power pushed us out of the room like we'd been swept up in a tornado?" Ares asked lightly, a mystified glint in his gaze.

I bit my lip again, because I was suspicious that the wind had come from me. I could see that kind of power coming in handy, but it just added to the confusion of why I’d have such power in the first place.

"Yeah, since then."

"Are we going to talk about this–" he began, but Daxon cut him off.

"No, we’re not. At least not right now. We also have a lot to talk about when it comes toyouas well. But Rune’s hungry, and I promised her some food. Since I don't have food, however, my best chance of providing her with that is through you bastards.”

Ares rolled his eyes. "Tell me more sweet nothings," he said sarcastically. But then my stomach growled, and he looked as worried about it as Daxon seemed to be.

Give a girl a break; I’d literally just had sex for three days. I could only imagine the kind of calorie burning that had done for me. Of course I was hungry. Ravenous, in fact.

Ares tipped his head to the right, back into the forest. "Wilder and I have been hanging with the bear shifters while we waited for you. I'm sure they'll be happy to serve you," he teased.

I groaned, remembering how over the top they’d been once they thought I was the lost princess, something I agreed with them I was at this point, but I certainly wasn't prepared for that kind of thing.

Wait a minute…Ares hadn’t even been there. How long had he been watching us?

My stomach growled again. Okay, questions could wait while I got a hot meal. Or any kind of food.

Daxon took my hand and marched toward the forest. I could feel Ares’s amusement behind us as he followed.

I felt the dark shadow of the castle behind me, and though I fought the urge to look, I couldn't help but glance back.

There were no signs of ghosts. I didn't get any more new visions. But I couldn't shake the creepy feeling dancing down my spine, or the sensation that eyes were on me.

I couldn’t get away from the place quick enough, even if the trip had been life-changing in a way completely unanticipated.

We walked farther into the woods, and after a five minute stroll, I inhaled the scent of smoke on the wind. I glanced back at Ares, whose gaze was fastened on my ass.

He met my eyes unrepentantly. "Have you been hanging out at the castle every day?”

"I've been looking around the place, waiting for you two to emerge, wondering if I could find anything interesting." He shrugged and shook his head. "There's a lot in there, but nothing that gave any more clues to the past.”

Again something pushed at my thoughts, a memory that for the life of me I couldn't recall. Hopefully it would come to me sooner rather than later, or I was really going to be bugged.

We made our way into a clearing where the bear shifters were gathered around a large fire. I immediately glanced around for Wilder, but he was nowhere to be seen.

"He’s been…going for walks a lot," Ares said, obviously reading the worry in my features. "I'm sure he'll be back soon; he’s been checking in about as often as I have to see if you'd returned."
