He opened the back door for me and I slid inside. Before closing the door, Caleb paused, his lips pinching, and I saw the pain etched in his eyes. “I don’t think anything I say can ease your pain from today, but my grandfather once said something to me that has always stayed with me.”

I blinked the tears away. “What was it?”

“That sometimes the universe will challenge us. It will take away everything. But every one of us has the power to change our fate. You just have to fight for what you want no matter how much it hurts.”

With a small smile, he closed the door and got into the driver’s seat, and started the car. But his saying brought back my mother’s last words.

Remember to always fight for what you want.

Grief burned through me, and I dropped my face into my hands, crying.

“I’m really sorry this happened to you, Gwendolyn,” he murmured. “I heard from friends about your village going up in smoke, and we all came quickly so we could lend a helping hand. But we didn’t get here quick enough.”

I wanted to say something about this not being his fault, but no words came. As we began to drive away from the village, I stared out my window, up at the sky, watching the ash blowing in the wind like snow.

Ashes of where I’d once belonged, and the life I’d lost.

Forever.
