“Rachel, if you do that to everyone who talks shit about me, you’re not going to have too many classmates left by the end of the week.”

“Then Amanda and I can have the professors all to ourselves and we won’t need to study outside of class,” I tell him, making him smile. “And you know what that makes more time for.”

That warms up his smile, and I stop to wrap my arms around him, keeping it from cooling.

“Maybe you should put it into words,” he murmurs.

He wants to hear me say something filthy, out in public, where any passing students could hear.

I smile at him, and lean in close to whisper, “Cleaning the house.”

He laughs and lets me go when I step back.

I feel lighter, knowing he’s feeling good.

We walk home together slowly, so Carter can keep me all to himself for a little longer.

Chapter Eight

silas

Theghostinthegarden makes me wish Rachel set the spell to keep the house clear of spirits to cover the surrounding area as well. I see her out there when I get up in the morning, and she’s still there when I start prep for dinner. She’s not going away.

I sigh as I set the knife down.

I need to start dealing with them when they come. The thought of it makes my stomach churn, but I know that’s just because of the past. Things are different now. I don’t want to go back to shutting them out, to pretending they’re not a part of who I am.

I just wish it could wait. It hasn’t been that long since the spirits of the dead girls in the woods were set to rest. The cops uncovered all of the bodies within a week. The spirits disappeared after that, and everything was quiet for a while. Cecilia decided to depart finally, too.

I hoped I wouldn’t have to deal with another ghost for a while, but I can’t avoid them forever.

The back door sticks a little as I open it, and I mentally add it to the list of things to fix around the house. That list is getting longer every day. The house is pretty damn old.

Sighing, I step out into the garden.

It’s bright out, and I find myself squinting a little as I move closer to the ghost.

She’s a teenager; a skinny blonde with a vaguely Goth kind of look.

Her gaze fixes on mine and a hint of guilt hits as I wonder if she’s one of the girls buried in the woods. Maybe the cops didn’t find her remains. Maybe that’s why she’s still around.

“Are you going to tell me why you’re here?” I ask, when she doesn’t immediately launch into who she is and why she needs me to help her.

She smiles slowly. Fuck, please tell me she’s not a poltergeist.

I didn’t come out of retirement as a medium to end up murdered by a ghost with telekinetic abilities.

“Your girlfriend is in trouble,” the ghost tells me.

I frown at her. “What?”

“She pissed off three witches who are planning to kill her now.”

I don’t believe what I’m hearing. A spirit who isn’t instantly trying to get me to do something for them is rare enough. One who actually wants to warn me about something that has zero to do with them is even rarer. Something’s off here.

“Sorry, I don’t have time for this.” I turn to go back into the house.

“Silas, don’t you dare walk away from me.”
