Chills run up my spine. She knows my name.

I turn back and look at her a little harder. “Who are you?”

“You don’t recognize me,” she says, as if she can’t believe it.

If she’s someone I knew when she was alive, it must have been a long time ago.

I search her face, but I can’t see anything familiar.

“I’m sorry, I don’t.”

She frowns but shakes her head. “It doesn’t matter. I only came to warn you. Your girl just showed what she can do, but she’s only one witch. A coven is stronger, more powerful, even if its witches are weak individually.”

I let her words sink in, and a ball of dread starts to form in my guts, a cold, leaden weight.

“If anyone tries to hurt our mate...” I start, before she cuts me off.

“You’re not listening, Silas.Witcheswant Rachel dead. They have magic. You don’t.”

And with that verbal gut-punch, she vanishes.

I take in a breath, trying to calm myself as I check my phone.

It’s after four. Rachel will be home soon.

I can ask her about what happened, and we can figure things out from there.

I step back inside the house and lock the back door. I hear the front door opening, and then Carter’s bag drops to the ground with a dull thump before Rachel starts laughing. I move down the hallway and watch as our mate moves away from our Omega’s grasping hands.

“Tonight isn’t your night,” she reminds him, as her gaze meets mine.

I automatically think of the schedule she created to make sure she was giving us all equal quality time with her, and I don’t know why I feel disappointed. I already knew tonight would be her time with Adrian. It’s not like I don’t count down the hours until I have time alone with her.

“And we should help Silas with dinner,” she adds, coming toward me and pushing onto her toes to give me a peck on the lips. I’m about to wrap my arms around her and pull her in close, but then I realize she smells like Carter and his smug little grin as he passes makes me glower at him.

“Maybe we should be revisiting the schedule now that you’re in school with Carter all day,” I tell her, hearing his indignant gasp as he vanishes into the kitchen. I try and fail to hold back a smirk.

Rachel starts to raise an eyebrow and then nods. “You know what, that’s probably fair.”

“Wait, what?” Carter asks, stomping back into the hall.

She shrugs at him. “Unless you want to stop using my room at lunch time and actually just eat lunch?”

I can’t help the snort that comes out when I look at his face.

He frowns at me. Clearly, he thought he’d be all over Rachel all day every day and still get to spend every third night in her exclusive company. That’s not happening. I don’t care if it’s petty. I’m very protective of the time I get to spend with our mate without my pack brothers.

“Let’s talk about it later,” I say, deciding to give him a break. “Did something happen today that you want to tell us about?”

Rachel’s brow creases for a second before she nods. “You spoke to a ghost.”

“There was a girl in the garden for a couple hours. She told me a coven has it out for you.”

She rolls her eyes. “The class bitch and her two lapdogs don’t exactly make a coven.”

The ball of dread in my stomach starts to get bigger. “What happened?”

“It was nothing,” she tells me. “They were being horrible, so I teleported them out to the woods.”
