She helped me see what I was doing, where I’d gone wrong.

She pulled me out of the hole I’d dug for myself.

She deserves to have everything a mate could ever need and want, and more.

That’s what keeps me going. It’s what keeps me standing behind this bar when it’s the last thing I feel like doing. I want this place to be what it used to be. I want Wolf Creek to be our home.

I’d just rather be at our house right now, with my pack, than standing here serving customers who are starting to become regulars again.

I look up when the door opens, hoping to see Silas arrive to take over for the night.

I get Danny instead, and I can’t hold back my disappointment.

He’s in his cop uniform, so I’m guessing he’s not here to drink.

“Hey,” I mutter, my wolf getting slightly aggravated as he steps closer.

Ever since he became a hybrid, it’s challenging to be around him.

Alpha wolves aren’t made to get along with each other.

It feels like he’s pissing on my territory just being here.

I hold my wolf back, ignoring the instinct to threaten Danny for setting foot inside my bar. He’s still the same guy who helped us with a problem whenever we needed it. The warlock who used him to kidnap Carter was the one who hurt us. Danny was just a bystander. If it weren’t for his new wolf side, I wouldn’t have a problem with him.

“Hey, Adrian,” he greets me in return, keeping a bit of distance from the bar.

He’s observing pack law and giving me space while he’s in my territory. Funny, it doesn’t make my wolf any less irritable. “Can I get you something?”

“Just checking in,” he lets me know, his smile starting to tighten.

He can handle this a little better than I can. Having two distinct animal forms can be confusing, from what I’ve heard, but it’s an advantage to him in this situation. His gator side doesn’t care that I’m an Alpha too.

“Nothing to report,” I tell him, hoping the conversation is done.

He doesn’t want anything of mine. He’s just here to test his wolf because he’s new.

He nods slowly. “Good to know. Have a nice evening.”

He looks around before he leaves, and I see the relief in his eyes before he disappears.

I unclench my fists, and I feel blood on my palms.

There are too many Alphas in this town. Wolf Creek isn’t big enough for all of us.

Sean has already made it clear that he’s going to leave, as soon as his mate and his Omega have finished up at the academy. That makes him a temporary annoyance. My wolf does a lot better with those. I can ignore my primal urges around the mechanic.

Dannywon’tleave. I know without having that conversation.

He’s lived here his whole life, and he’s essential to the supernatural community as the only cop who isn’t human. He’s needed here. He belongs here.

I don’t notice the door opening again. I don’t realize Silas has arrived until he’s at my side behind the bar, looking at me with worry in his dark eyes.

“You okay, Adrian?” he asks, probably because I didn’t leap over the bar to get the hell out of here the second he got in.

“I was just thinking,” I tell him.

“About what?”
