“Nothing important.” I need to brush it off.

I’ve had thoughts in the past about leaving this place, but those thoughts vanished when I accepted Rachel as my mate. I don’t want to go down that path again.

“I should...”

“I need to tell you something,” Silas starts quietly, grabbing my attention with his uncertain tone.

He’s worried, which isn’t unusual for a Beta, but for Silas it usually means there’s a real threat on the horizon. He doesn’t come to me with anything that isn’t important.

“What’s wrong?”

“It’s Rachel,” he starts, lowering his voice. “She cast a spell on a couple of witches who might be planning to hurt her in retaliation.”

The instinct to rush to my mate the instant I think she might be in trouble comes and goes in a flash.

Where magic’s concerned, wolves have no power.

My mate is as powerful as they come.

“Rachel can take care of herself,” I remind him.

He sighs. “I know she’s capable but look at what happened before.”

“That warlock was incredibly powerful, and her ex blindsided her.”

“Spirits rarely bother to warn the living of anything,” he says. “A ghost warned me Rachel was going to be in danger from a coven.”

That stalls me. “A ghost warned you about this?”

He nods, looking around as if he’s checking that no one is listening to us.

The guys at the bar are far more interested in the contents of their glasses, and random gossip about their neighbours. Keeping supernatural talk low isn’t something we need to worry about too much.

What we do need to worry about is our mate’s safety.

“We’ll come up with a plan later,” I tell him.

Right now, I want to see my mate.

Silaswasquietoverdinner, and Carter wasn’t quite as cheerful as usual. It only takes one person feeling a little off to affect the mood of the entire pack. I can’t help worrying about them both.

It’s this thing with those witches. I never should have done what I did.

Yet, what was the alternative? I didn’t come to this place to be kicked around.

It was what I was meant for, according to the Goddess of Witches, Freya.

She chose this for me when my future was drawn. Special Selection.

A place at a hybrid academy before I even became a hybrid.

There’s no doubt in my mind I was meant to be here.

My mates are here, and they need me. I need them.
