IforgeteverythingwhenAmanda walks back into the room in that dress. It barely skates over her curves, but she makes it look like the hottest outfit ever made just by being in it. The color suits her too. It’s not as vibrant as her eyes but it’s perfect with her skin-tone.

“Let’s get going, then,” I manage when she gets close.

I can see Parker and Dante have already awakened her heat while they were saying goodbye. Her cheeks are flushed, and her lips are wet and swollen. Her eyes are darker too. I don’t need to inhale to know her scent has sweetened with arousal.

I’m going to have to take her a little further away than I intended, I think. So, we get the chance to be completely alone somewhere that feels romantic.

I’ve never dreamed of having sex outside but one look at my mate and I know something’s going to happen tonight. That shower this morning was just an appetizer.

I take her hand and we head out to the car. It seems funny how long I slaved over it now, thinking it was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen in real life. It has nothing on Amanda. She’s the real deal.

The Mustang is just a car. I totally get that now.

I open the door for her, and she settles into the passenger seat. The urge to lift her over my shoulder and carry her back inside comes and goes. I can’t help the amorous feelings I get around her. She’s my true mate, the woman I was always meant to be with. It’s alarmingly intoxicating just being around her.

I force myself to close the door and head around to the driver’s side. The top is down. It’s warm out, as usual, for fall in Wolf Creek. A little too warm for me, but I have bottles of water chilling in the trunk, ready for when I inevitably overheat. I lean over to close the top of the picnic hamper that’s sitting in the backseat. The glass bottle of pink lemonade is slightly too big for it to close properly, apparently. I leave it and get into the car.

Amanda smiles at me. “So, where are we going?”

“You’ll see. I think you’ll like it.”

We get rolling, and the breeze from having the top down is a welcome relief from the heat.

It’s bright as well as hot, and I end up having to pull my shades from the glove box to minimize the glare while I drive.

Amanda stays quiet while we’re moving, her expression thoughtful as she looks out over the landscape. I can only take glimpses, but I can tell something’s bothering her. Dante was right.

Something happened at the academy. She’s usually quiet, but she doesn’t usually seem so pensive.

I don’t ask. I’m not going to push her. She’ll tell me when she’s relaxed.

She shares when she’s sated, when she’s safe and comfortable in my arms.

“Almost there,” I let her know when we’re close to the lake.

It takes a twenty-minute walk through dense woods to get to the spot I’m thinking of, and it’s hidden well enough that no one seems to know it’s there. I’ve never picked up shifter scents besides my own at that spot. It’s perfect.

Amanda gives me a quizzical glance when I park at the side of the road, next to a long stretch of forest. I can understand her confusion. It looks like there’s nothing special here.

“Um, this is it?” she asks.

I nod, as I get out. I open her door and realize I probably should have told her to wear sneakers. The wedges she’s fond of wearing won’t make the trek to the secluded spot next to the lake easy.

I’m going to have to improvise here.

She gets out and I close the door. I slip the car keys into my pocket and pick her up in my arms.

Her breath catches, her green eyes widening as she wraps her arm around my neck.

“It’ll be easier to carry you there,” I say as I start to walk into the forest.

I’ll just have to come back for the picnic basket.

She relaxes in my arms, resting her head on my shoulder.

I don’t know how long it takes to walk out to the little grassy bank next to the lake. It feels good to walk with her in my arms like this. She’s mine to hold and protect. She accepted my mark when I claimed her as my true mate, and it makes my teeth sharpen just thinking about it.

Our bond is unbreakable, but that doesn’t stop me from thinking about marking her again.
