CarterBlackwellisoneof the handful of other Omegas at the academy, and probably the most notorious in Wolf Creek. Before his mate arrived, he dated around a little and ended up with the kind of reputation no guy wants. So, I kind of get why he’d want to manhandle Rachel in public, even if it’s over the top. Still, grabbing her ass in front of everyone feels desperate to me.

I don’t need to climb all over Amanda to show everyone she’s mine.

The way her eyes light up when she sees me is enough.

The way she smiles and looks at me as if I’m something special.

She risked her life for me. She saved me from a fate worse than death.

There’s no question she loves me.

“How was your morning?” I ask, as she brushes her hair back.

She shrugs. “It’s been okay so far.”

Damn. She’s lying.

She really doesn’t know how to hide her feelings. They show all over her pretty face. I’d see it even if I couldn’t feel it. She has worried eyes now that she’s thinking about whatever happened in class.

“We should head back to the apartment for lunch. Park promised grilled cheese again, didn’t he?”

She nods, looking and feeling slightly relieved. She pushes the worry back, but it doesn’t vanish completely.

I guess she doesn’t want to think about whatever it is that’s bothering her.

I take her hand in mine and we get walking.

I let my Omega touch sink into her skin, just a little. It feels wrong when she isn’t admitting she’s worried, but ever since I accepted my wolf and became part of a pack, I’m finding it impossible to ignore the instincts that come hand-in-hand with being a shifter. Especially when those instincts concern my true mate.

We walk in comfortable silence in the sunlight, moving slowly through the gathering groups of students. There are a lot of new faces here, alongside students I’ve already spent a year with. I study the new faces carefully, trying to determine if any of them might have caused Amanda grief.

If someone’s been harassing or bullying my mate, I’ll make sure they never get the chance to do it again. Amanda doesn’t react any differently to any of them. She walks past everyone with her head down and gives me a smile when we’re past the gates.

The tension I eased with my touch slips away completely when we get closer to home. She knows Parker and Sean will be inside, waiting to eat lunch with us. I can’t say I don’t understand that feeling. Everything’s been different since I accepted my pack. I feel safer around them too, more relaxed. They’re family now.

Amanda lets go of my hand when we reach the apartment door and Sean is standing there, waiting for her. He grins at her. “Hey, how was class?”

She lies to him too, and the hint of worry comes back.

Damn. If she doesn’t want to tell our Alpha, I don’t know how I’m going to find out what’s wrong.

I wait for him to release her from the welcome home kiss he insists on before letting us inside.

She darts up the stairs to the apartment and Sean turns his distracted gaze on me when I don’t immediately follow.

“What’s wrong?” he asks, starting to frown.

“I don’t know, but something is,” I admit.

I hear Amanda squeal inside and I can picture Parker picking her up and spinning her around the second she stepped through the door. It makes me smile, but only for an instant.

Sean’s serious stare cuts through me. “It’s Amanda?”

“It could be nothing, but she’s lying about school being good.”

“It’s her first week and she’s shy,” he reminds me quietly, crossing his arms.

“It could be that, but she has Rachel.” She doesn’t need to worry too much about making friends, because she already made one over the summer.
