For a second, I don’t think he cares.

That he’s too far gone, too consumed by his anger.

He frowns, but he doesn’t give me an answer.

“You should hear what she’s got to say,” I tell him, holding out my hand for him to take.

He takes it after a second of hesitation, bringing the back of my hand up to his lips.

“I trust your instincts,” he tells me, kissing my hand. “But I’m coming straight back out here after.”

“I wouldn’t dream of trying to stop you.”

“That’s why we’re so good together.”

Chapter Sixty-Eight

Cheryl

Wewalkbackinsidetogether, and Everett stops by the front door. I raise an eyebrow at him, but I realize why he’s stopped moving a second later. The jukebox is on and it’s blaring some pretty cheesy pop music. He doesn’t want to go back inside.

“Ask her to talk in the living room. She probably doesn’t want her kid to hear what she’s got to say,” he says, before he goes across the hall into the room with the big screen TV.

I open the lounge door to find everyone watching Georgia’s little kid teaching Oscar dance steps.

It’s unbelievably adorable, even if the song feels like it’s steel-wire-scrubbing my braincells away one by one. Oscar is flailing around, acting like he doesn’t get it while the kid puts him to shame with super-speedy moves that are definitely being enhanced by his shifter side.

“Okay, I give up,” Oscar says, sitting down on the floor.

The kid stops and gives his shoulder a little push. “Aw come on.”

Oscar feigns a collapse back onto the floor dramatically. “I’m all tired out.”

I smile at them, and then I move toward the circle of couches. Noah and Georgia are the only ones sitting on actual seats. Vi, Ivy and Amanda are sitting on the floor near Oscar and his new best friend.

Georgia looks up at me, her posture tensing.

“Can we talk?” I ask. “In the other room.”

She nods and looks back at her kid who’s trying to tickle Oscar away while he fakes snoring.

“I’ll be right back, Leo.”

I lead her out of the room.

Everett’s waiting for us in the living room across the hall. He’s in one of the big leather armchairs that are meant for reclining in. He’s perched on the edge of the seat, tense as hell. Not exactly the best way to greet someone who’s come to us for help. I lead Georgia inside and close the door behind us.

“Take a seat.”

She hesitates before sitting down on the couch.

I sit in the armchair next to Everett.

“Rachel told us why you wanted help,” I start. “We need to know a little more about what’s been going on in Limestone Ridge.”

She nods slowly. “It’s… Because of where we are, we don’t get many visitors at all. Strangers pass through maybe two or three times a year, and they never come back. When your Beta showed up with his mate…”

“Rachel’s a friend,” Everett cuts in. “She has her own pack and her own mates.”
