Georgia clears her throat. “I’m not.”

Mabel looks at me. “Is there a reason you’ve invited a stranger to this meeting?”

“She’s here because she asked us to rescue her from Limestone Ridge’s pack. The same pack you’re about to release our Omega to. It won’t be safe for him there.”

Mabel turns her head to Georgia. “Did you ask these people to rescue you from your pack?”

Georgia’s fingers tremble on her collar. She shakes her head.

I blink at her in disbelief.

“What’s really going on here?” Mabel asks Georgia.

She refuses to look at me, but her cheeks are burning crimson. “They came to our town looking for some reason to stop our Alpha from claiming their Omega as it is his right to do. I was instructed to come back here with them to let you know what they did.”

What the hell? Rachel’s eyes are wide when Georgia slouches back in the seat. She looks over at me in horror. Rachel bought that this woman was afraid for her life, and her kid’s life, but all Georgia did was throw all of us under the bus.

“Is that right?” Mabel murmurs, her unimpressed gaze fixed on our guest.

Georgia nods, her eyes glassy and unfocused.

“You lied?” Rachel whispers. “Oh my Goddess. You lied.”

Everett doesn’t seem moved. I don’t know how much of this he’s really taking in. He was ready for a fight when he walked out before. His energy hasn’t changed. He’s still incredibly angry.

Mabel looks at me. “Is it true that you went looking for a reason to stop her Alpha’s claim?”

I could say no. I didn’t personally go looking, but I doubt the omission would earn me any points with her. She doesn’t seem very pleased. It’s better to be honest.

“I sent Rachel and Noah to check on the town. I had a bad feeling about the Alpha, and I still don’t believe Oscar killed that girl.”

She’s silent for a moment. I keep quiet, even when the urge to explain further rises up. She did the spell that showed what happened to that girl. It’s probably incredibly insulting to have someone question what she thinks she proved beyond a shadow of a doubt.

She clears her throat. “While I understand the desire to make sure your Omega is going to be taken to a place that is safe, your pack broke protocol going there while this case is still open. That never should have happened. You should have requested to be shown around before you allowed Oscar to be taken there.”

Oh Goddess. We broke a rule. There’s no way in hell she’s going to help us now.

“We weren’t made aware of all the rules,” Rachel speaks up. “We weren’t told to seek advice from someone who practices pack law. We had no idea what our options were.”

“That’s why I’m going to overlook the broken protocol in this instance,” she tells us. “I’ll ensure you’re sent the proper reading materials to refer to in these situations in future, and we’ll move on to completing the transfer of your Omega to his new pack.”

“New information came up that we need to ask about before we can allow that,” I say quickly, earning myself an irritable glower.

“There can’t possibly be any new information that would clear your Omega of the crime he very obviously committed, so whatever it is, it’s irrelevant.”

“But there is,” I insist. “It might have looked like Oscar, but he’s been having blackouts that we can’t explain. I tried to help him uncover the cause, and he revealed he’s been having conversations with a spirit. It’s possible he was possessed when that girl was killed. That would mean he isn’t guilty of killing her.”

Mabel frowns at me. “You can’t be serious.”

“The very fact that he’s open to contact from spirits means he’s vulnerable to that kind of contact,” Rachel adds. “Blackouts are common in cases of possession.”

I doubt we’re telling her anything she doesn’t know.

She doesn’t seem to be humoring us very well.

Her frown deepens as she turns back to me. “This isn’t usual, but I will do you the courtesy of checking your mate over. If he’s been possessed, I’ll know.”

“I’ll get him,” I tell her, getting up quickly.
