“You can remove this woman from the room before you go,” she says, gesturing at Georgia. “She doesn’t need to hear anything more.”

Georgia gives me a frightened stare, as if she thinks I’m going to lash out physically when I stop in front of her. She knows she screwed us over. She can’t take it back now. It’s done.

“Come on,” I tell her, wanting to get her out of our home. She’s no longer welcome.

She nods and gets up. I don’t touch her. I don’t want anything more to do with her.

I lead her back across the hall to the lounge, stopping outside the closed door.

I turn. “Well done on tricking us into ‘rescuing’ you and your son. You must be a really good liar, because every one of us believed your story. I hope for your sake it was just a story.”

Tear drip from her eyes as she stares back at me. She doesn’t say a word. Doesn’t try to defend her actions or apologise for what she did. She wipes at the tears and looks down at her feet.

I don’t care that I’ve scared or upset her. All I care about now are my family.

“Take your son and leave,” I tell her, opening the door to the lounge.

I hold the door open for Georgia to enter. She darts inside, moves over to her kid.

Oscar looks up from where he’s sitting beside the sleeping boy.

I clear my throat. “Oscar.”

He gets up. “It’s time?”

My stomach clenches at the lost look he gives me. I can’t believe this is happening. That I could be seconds away from losing one of my mates to another pack.

I nod, because anything else would give him false hope.

He gets up and steps past Georgia who still has her head down.

I let the door fall shut once he’s in the hall with me.

“I feel weird,” he murmurs.

“Mabel’s going to check if you were possessed,” I tell him. “Bianca’s going to watch over you if we can’t do anything to stop this and you need to go with them. We’ll know if you’re in danger.”

He raises an eyebrow at me. “Bianca’s going to be my guardian angel?”

“It sounds crazy, I know, but she knows it’s the only way we’ll help her move on.”

He laughs. “I can just imagine how pissed off that’s making her.”

I take his hand and we go toward the living room, every step making me want to turn around and run. I’m tempted to try my magic, to see if I can teleport us away from here until we can figure out the truth about his blackouts, and the girl’s death. I reach for it, but it isn’t there.

My fingers don’t tingle with Freya’s energy.

I’m still drained, tapped out despite resting and replenishing my reserves.

We don’t have a last-minute escape route. This is really happening.

“Whatever happens,” I tell him. “We’re not giving up on you. We’ll find a way to fix this.”

If all else fails, Everett will be more than ready to challenge and kill his new Alpha to get our Omega back where he belongs.

Oscar smiles, but it doesn’t reach his eyes.

Goddess, I should have tried harder to help him heal the trauma that caused the fractured connection with his wolf. He’s so lost right now, and he’s about to endure a process that will cause him more pain and loss. There’s nothing humane about breaking bonds that neither party wants to sever.
