Georgia had seemed so genuine, and so grateful for our help. I guess appearances can be deceptive.

This fucking sucks. She could have helped us keep Oscar out of that Alpha’s hands.

I move along the corridor quickly, stopping a couple of times when the scent trail starts to tail off and then picks back up. There’s a window open somewhere. A draught interfering with the trail.

I get close to the end of the hallway and come across a door that’s been wedged open by a footstool. This is where the draught is coming from. I step into the small bedroom next to Vi and Ivy’s suite, and I find Leo sleeping in the bed, a folded-up slip of paper on the nightstand, wedged under the base of the lamp.

I pick it up and move past the bed to the open window.

If Georgia got out this way, she’s gone from sight.

I close it and turn the lock.

Then, I look at the note.

“Fuck.”

Chapter Seventy-Eight

Cheryl

Westandoutsideholdingeach other for who knows how long. The witch is long gone, and there’s bite to the air by the time we break apart. I feel like a piece of me is missing. I know Everett feels exactly the same way. Oscar belongs to us, and he was stolen away.

Both of us are used to fighting for what’s important, but this goes way beyond everything else.

“You need some rest,” he tells me, his voice quiet but grainy as if he hurt his throat shouting.

“You too,” I remind him.

He growls. “I’ll rest when that Alpha is dead.”

“You’ll rest before then if I have to force you,” I tell him. “You won’t be at your best if you fight him while you’re exhausted.”

“I could fight him with a hand tied behind my back and a dead leg. I’d still win.”

“I’m glad to see your confidence is still completely intact.”

“It is,” he says, “and it’s because of you.”

I blink at him. “What?”

“You have no idea how much better you make me, Cheryl. It’s like I was sleepwalking through life when we met. I didn’t know what it was like to really be awake until you came along. I wasn’t really sure about anything. I didn’t know what I wanted. Now, I do.”

“And what is it that you want?” I ask.

“You, of course. I want to keep building a pack with you. I trust you to take the reins when I don’t trust myself and I think you feel the same way. We work as a team. We have different weaknesses. Different strengths. We fit together. We’re not made to be apart.”

“I never want to be apart.”

He smiles. “We never will.”

We move toward the front door of the house, together.

I almost feel like everything’s going to be okay, even if we’re in for an excruciating wait.

Then, Noah comes running down the stairs, his lips set in a grim line.

He waves a piece of paper at us, and Everett takes it from him.
