The gates open, and we roll on through at a nice, gentle pace.

“Holy fucking shit,” I whisper, my mouth dropping open in shock.

I thought Everett lived in a mansion. It’s tiny compared to this place.

This house looks like a castle, or at the very least, an expensive hotel.

“Don’t get used to it,” the Beta next to me murmurs. “You won’t be here long.”

“Death threats are so last year,” I tell him with a fake yawn that turns real halfway through.

He shakes his head at me. The guy hates me. I must have really fucked with him in a past life.

The driver parks in front of the big entrance.

This is the Alpha’s house.

He isn’t dressed like he owns a fucking castle, but I guess Everett doesn’t really dress like he owns a mansion either. If I had this kind of money, believe me, people would know the minute they saw me, and they’d see me coming from far, far away.

“Get out,” the scowly Beta tells me. “No one’s holding the door open for you.”

He gets out after telling me that. I take my time, marvelling at the huge house and wondering what every room looks like. There’s probably all kinds of weird shit in this place. Hidden passages, those bookcases that spin around…

“Move it,” the Beta says, already at my side before I’ve even got the car door shut.

We came here in a regular old estate car. Nothing too fancy.

Maybe it’s a classic or something kind of rare. It doesn’t look cool or retro to me, but who knows?

I don’t know cars. I’m not a big gearhead, or whatever.

I move toward the front entrance of the building, before the scowly Beta gets pokey with me.

He has the look of a poker. He also has the look of a severely repressed postal worker at the end of his rope. Those are both things to stay far away from.

The driver moves ahead of us and unlocks the door, handing the keys to the Alpha afterwards.

Oh, fancy. He has a key-handler.

The driver steps inside. Then, I get a sharp poke in the side when I look but don’t move into the building’s entrance hall.

“Move,” Scowly breathes.

I roll my eyes. “I’m moving. There’s no need to finger me again.”

I step inside and I know I must look like a kid on Christmas. There’s a fucking chandelier, and it’s magnificent. I can barely take my eyes off the thing as I walk across the no-doubt-fancy carpet.

I’ll never know why Everett’s mansion isn’t jam-packed full of these.

If I was loaded, I’d have chandeliers and chaise lounges all over the damn house.

“You can go now,” I hear the Alpha say.

Go? I turn and see him dismissing his Betas.

That’s when the reality of my situation starts to kick in.

Despite trying to avoid taking any of this seriously, I know I’m in trouble.
