He takes it and practically drags me down the hall, racing along like he’s the Cookie Monster for cake, chanting about cake under his breath as he goes.

“Leo!” Ivy calls out.

I turn to see her checking his room.

“Over here!” he bellows down the corridor, making me wince.

So much for trying to be quiet and avoid waking Cheryl and Noah.

We’re right outside the master bedroom. There’s no way they didn’t hear that.

Ivy comes toward us, looking slightly mortified.

“I’m so sorry,” she says. “I asked him to wait a minute so I could change out of my pyjamas.”

“It’s fine. We’re grabbing breakfast. You can take your time.”

Her eyes widen. “If you’re sure…”

I nod. Leo tugs on my hand.

“Cake,” he murmurs. “Cake, cake, cake.”

“Not for breakfast, sweetie,” Ivy tells him, grimacing slightly. “It’ll make you sick.”

“I’m taking cake…” I tell her, shaking my head when that word comes out my mouth. “I’m taking care of it. Seriously.”

“Okay. Thanks,” Ivy says. “I’ll be down to grab coffee soon. I’d like to stay with Vi till she wakes up.”

“Good idea.”

“Cake,” Leo growls.

Wow. Little kid growls are kind of scary.

Especially when their eyes flash.

Better get him cake before his fangs appear.

“See you in a bit,” I tell Ivy, before I get us moving again.

The kid goes back to his Cake Monster chanting.

He drags me the whole way, like my feet aren’t going fast enough.

This little guy has way too much energy.

He lets go of my hand once we’re in the kitchen. Starts to do his little excited dance again.

“Cake for breakfast! Cake for lunch! Cake for dinner! Then more cake. Cake. Cake. Cake.”

I assume he doesn’t usually get much sugar. I hope Ivy’s wrong about this making him sick.

Guess I’m about to find out. Hope you don’t puke little guy.

“What do you usually get for breakfast?” I ask.

“Cake.”
