The kitchen door opens, and Rachel’s phone starts to ring.

“Well, this will mostly be for you,” she says, as she answers it. “Hey, Silas. Did you get an answer…?”

She moves past me toward the pantry, and lets Noah come into the room behind her as she slips into the dining room to start the call in private.

He raises an eyebrow as he stops by the sink, picking up a dish towel to dry what I’m washing.

“I’m assuming you didn’t just call us in here to help you with the dishes.”

“No, I called you in here to tell you what’s happening in an hour.”

“An hour?” he asks. “That’s a little early, isn’t it?”

“Well, we’re expecting them to try and slow us down, so we need to factor that in.”

“Shit. That’s a good point.”

“We can’t bring everyone,” I go on, knowing he’s not going to like the next part. “And we don’t want to just leave Vi with Ivy, so…”

“You’re leaving me here with them and the kid, right?” he asks, letting out a sigh.

“They could have an attack planned while we’re gone. It’s not safe to bring Vi to a place where the Alpha sells Omegas, and one Beta’s not much of a defence. We need you and Ivy to stay here.”

“I get it,” he says. “I wouldn’t be much help in a one-on-one challenge anyway. I assume you’re taking Rachel in case you need an extra boost of magic?”

“She’ll be ready to teleport Oscar home if anything goes wrong. I’ll be Everett’s back-up if the Alpha cheats or tries to add his Betas into the fight. Magic can be used when cheating’s involved. So we’ve got everything covered.”

“Glad to hear it, but I’ll be even gladder when you’re back home with Oscar.”

“Me too, believe me.”

Rachel steps back in from the dining room. She has her phone in her hand, so apparently the call wasn’t for me after all. “Dante’s going to send us the charm we need for you to be able to communicate with the ghost. He can teleport objects. He’s waiting for Kelly to finish making it, and then he’ll teleport it to where he is, before he teleports it here. It’s easier in two steps, apparently.”

“Wow. He can do that? I didn’t think he was high level.”

Rachel shrugs. “It surprised me too. He’s a little tight-lipped about magic.”

Her phone buzzes in her hand and she checks her messages.

“Apparently, the charm’s about to be sent.”

She slips the phone in her pocket and holds her hands out.

It appears in her palms. A basic silver locket charm filled with whatever ingredients it needs to allow the average shifter to have a conversation with a spirit.

“Okay, I’ll tell Silas we’re ready,” Rachel says.

I wipe my wet hands on a towel and take the charm out of her hands.

“Did I miss something?” Noah asks.

“A ghost wants to speak to me,” I reveal. “It’s probably easier if we go out back, right?”

“We’re invoking necromancer magic with this, so it doesn’t matter,” Rachel says.

“Why does a ghost want to talk to you?” Noah asks.

“That’s what we’re about to find out,” I tell him.
