I look up. The woman standing there does look a bit like Oscar, I guess.

“That’s wolfsbane,” Lily says, drawing Bianca’s attention. “In his wound. That’s why he’s paralysed and it’s why he can’t talk.”

“Oh,” Bianca says, getting back to her feet. “Then I guess you’re done for.”

“I have an idea, but it’s going to sound crazy,” Lily says.

I keep my eyes on her and she starts to explain.

“Shifter magic allows you to shift forms. That usually means shifting between human and wolf, but, like Liam discovered, there are always other options. You’re dying right now because of your wolf.”

Fuck. Mercer shifted into Oscar’s form. That’s how he tricked me. It’s how he stole Oscar away in the first damn place. He tricked a fate-touched witch into thinking Oscar killed that girl.

“Witches aren’t affected by wolfsbane,” Oscar’s mom goes on. “If you shift into the form of a witch, into someone you know who can’t shift forms, you’ll heal, and the poison won’t kill you. Then you can shift back to your own form.”

Bianca shudders. “No way. That can’t be a real thing.”

“There is a price for using shifter magic this way,” she continues, ignoring Bianca. “Once you shift into a different form it becomes part of the forms you shift into. So, sometimes you’ll need to become the other form. It’s part of being moon cursed.”

I listen, because I can’t do much else. It’s all very interesting, but I don’t see how I’m supposed to shift forms when I’m paralysed, even if it’s not into my wolf form.

“He has a point,” Bianca says. “How can he shift at all if he can’t move?”

“We need his mate, and her friend,” Lily says. “They can help him.”

Bianca sighs. “Well, they’re kind of busy right now so you might have a long wait. Try not to die.”

She vanishes, and I’m left with the woman who looks like she could be Oscar’s mom standing over me, making me wonder if any of this is real or imagined.

I fight to stay conscious, and to listen to the stranger as she starts to talk again, but I can feel everything slipping away no matter how hard I fight to control what’s happening to me.

The room gets darker, and her voice sounds further away.

I don’t know how much longer I can hold on.

Chapter One-Hundred-Three

Cheryl

Mercerlungesatme, shifting into his wolf form and slashing at my chest. I drop back and use a knockout spell. Magic isn’t strictly allowed in this situation, but we already know this guy doesn’t play fair. I’m not going to stick to pack law enforced rules when he won’t.

I smell wolfsbane on his claws and my worry for Everett peaks.

He hasn’t come back, and Mercer told us he’s dead.

The knockout spell hits him, and he falls, but he jumps back up in an instant, his form getting bigger.

This is what he does. He uses shifter magic to shift into other forms to give himself an advantage.

I throw a fireball at him, and he turns into a smaller wolf to dodge it.

Witch magic is my only advantage. I need to use it.

I engage a forcefield when he lunges at me, and he’s bounced back to the ground.

He jumps to his feet, snarling nastily.

Goddess, this fight is never going to end.
